Re: ProFW: Insiders say that Mayo is odds on favorite to start at ILB immediately
If Mayo puts on lean mass, he wont have to worry about losing speed. I doubt Beli and co are telling the guy to put on slop weight that will do nothing for him.
Lot's of heavy squats, snatches, cleans and bench benches coming up for Mr Mayo. I am glad we took this kid, he is going to be a beast.

Re: ProFW: Insiders say that Mayo is odds on favorite to start at ILB immediately
The normal pattern for Pats first round picks is to get a lot of reps from Day 1, but not to get full starter's reps at the position. Mankins was an outlier in one direction, while Meriweather was an outlier in the other. And Watson was just plain hurt.
But Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, and Maroney all fit that template. And while I forget the details, Grahambo surely was close to it as well.

On the 'gain 15 pounds' thing.
He's listed at like 245. Fifteen pounds would be 260.
Why would they want him at 260? 250 makes more sense, and is more achievable.
Part of what this guy adds is some speed.
Re: ProFW: Insiders say that Mayo is odds on favorite to start at ILB immediately
I wouldn't be surprised if neither Bruschi or Seau "start" next season. I put start in quotes b/c I think/hope we'll see some heavy rotations and situational substitutions to take advantage of the great depth we have at the position and keep guys fresh over the course of the season.
But as I just discussed with a fellow poster in another thread, Hobson - size and strengths wise - seems like a good fit for SILB, and Mayo seems like a natural fit for WILB. I've read some other posters speculate that the weak link in the D last season Bruschi playing SILB once Colvin went down, and given that, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Hobson playing considerable time at SILB and Mayo at WILB. Just my .02.

ProFW has been big on Mayo calling him a Rookie of the Year candidate. Last Thurs or Friday Felger was gushing like a little girl about Mayo.
Having said that, he has not played a down in the NFL so I want to see him in pre-season before I list him as a starter.

He hasn't even played a down in training camp yet. Me thinks that whomever this "Insider" is has no connection to the organization whatsoever. Let's save the optimism for training camp and see what he can do.
