Default Maroney never thought he would have been drafted by New England

He met with one scout. Period.

It wasnt even a interview and it was just some quick questions.

He was never invited to Gillette never had a personal workout, he was surprised when the patriots called him at 21 and selected him.

He never thought he would have been drafted by new england.

Just watched the video on Patriots today where he said he never saw it coming.

Just goes to show you that sometimes Patriots will pick a guy out of left field even if they havnt even talked to him.

That's also the 21st overall pick. The Pats are doing much more research this year as this pick is 14 spots better than that one.

I thought for sure I remembered hearing that the Pats hosted him at Gillette.

Well, whatever happened, I'm glad we drafted him. He saved our butts in the playoffs last year.

True that.
I would still like to see him to be used as a receiver out of the backfield ala Brian Westbrook.
We saw flashes last year but for some reason the Pats were reluctant to go to him more.
Hopefully in 08.

I don't think it's that at all. Rather, I think the Pats figured they could research him by other means, and keep their interest quiet.

E.g., BB is on record as saying that carrying the ball is pretty much the same thing from Pop Warner up to the pros, while blitz pickup is a whole different skill at the pro level. Maybe they feel they can learn what they need on film, plus enough reference checks to confirm he's the human being he appears to be.

Co-sign. Add to that the fact that the Pats also have to look at the possibility of trading down or even up from that 7th pick, there really isn't a value level in the entire draft the Pats can't look at. As BB said himself, before they could just rule out certain players.

the first round pick is the first round pick. Do you honestly think BB told the scouts 2 years ago; 'Hey we don't pick til hour 3 of the broadcast. Take it easy a bit and spend next weekend bbqing with the wife and kids instead of going to the combine.'

yeah right.

If anything the fact that there are only 6 teams in front of you means to me they can do less research. There are only 6 teams to steal the guy (or guys) who you would slot into that value area.

Because of the way BB-Pioli run the draft analysis; It won't change the research they need to do on the picks. (from my understanding from past years - they look at everybody and give them values or slots) But it will lessen the 'opposition research' that they need to do on the teams who pick in front of them (at least for round 1).

Why would it lessen it? You still have to scout for teams that may trade above you and snatch the player you want, a la the Jets taking Kyle Brady away from the Browns back in 1995.
