BEDARD: 16 Scouts On Hand Last Night
By: Ian Logue

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reported this morning that there were 16 scouts on hand for last night's Patriots, which he said was an "unusually high" number for a preseason game....

Guarantee you with the lack of offseason, this will be closer to the norm rather than unusual. The Pats do have a glut of d-linemen and WRs. I am sure teams feel the Pats might release a d-lineman who will at least be a good situational player for another team.

We have 90 players on the roster (not sure if that excludes PUP's), of which 37 will be cut (roughly 41%). Like a fr**king buffet.

We'll find a way to keep 60 around, between the practice squad and various injury statuses (statusi?).

So of the roughly 30 that get cut, I'd bet 12-15 end up on opening day NFL rosters, and another 6 or so end up being picked up at sometime during the year.

Can't we stop them from entering the stadium or something?

Those scouts are there to see which guys their teams would like to vulch off the Pats and to a lesser extent the Jaguars once roster cutdowns happen. A lot of Pats cuts have gone on to success with other teams, see Ted Larsen for a particularly successful outcome or the Bucs. That's why BB was quoted this offseason as saying he had to get his evaluations on the youngsters right.

Oh and I'm sure some of them were scouting the hell out of Hoyer and Mallett as well for down the road.

With the NFL increasing the size of training camp rosters from 80 to 90, it would not surprise me in the least to see more trades just before final roster cuts, as well as more signings than usual by teams after those final cuts.

All those (potential) late additions, combined with the lack of OTAs and minicamps this past off-season could result in some sloppy play the first few weeks of the NFL season. Hopefully the Patriots will be one of those teams that take advantage of the chaos elsewhere and get off to a hot start.

Good luck sneaking players onto the Practice Squad.

Yeah, first and only game, we're loaded. I mentioned that in regards to Hoyer maybe becoming as valuable as some fans had thought he was already, without that exposure.

Sometimes it's a matter of having that showcase.
