Still think we will see Dowling at safety this year. With the lack of depth and the reports of Meriweather having a less than stellar camp, I think he will get Eugene Wilson-ized.
I know Zolak said you don't draft a CB in the second round and move him to safety, but the Pats already did that with Wilson.
I have been saying Safety was a major issue for the Pats after last year but was shouted down by the Pros on this forum. I think Bill wants some more competition. BM has looked like crap. JS sits out the dance and you got a guy like Malcomb Williams who was a CB back up in college, taking FS reps.
I agree with you on Dowling. Is Dowling 4th CB as a 2nd rounder? Don't think so. I don't know what ST work Dowling will get so they did not hire him to replace Slater. He is noted for his size, tackling and hard nosed approach as well as ball skills. It screams Safety to me.
Safety roster wise? You still have a back up Safety with a $3m CAP price which is way too much for what he brings. Then you have a Safety who will ask for the moon in 2012 so now is your chance to move him. You do have Chung and I think Brown is competing very well in TC too.
Arrington was just resigned for his hard work. Maybe he is an answer. He even played DE last year.
The guy I would take a shot at can't come to the Pats until Sept. 22nd. This is like the Jets with Holmes last year. They took a shot. I think Tanard Jackson of the Bucs would be a great pick up. He is sober now and "one more false move" and he is out. He will be watched closely by the league. He has Pro Bowl ability. This will allow you do redo the Safety roster. You can trade both BM and Sanders and hold on until Oct. with perhaps Chung and Arrington (or Dowling) as your starting Safeties. With Brown and perhaps Josh Barrett(who the Patriots also signed for two years for a reason). I say take a shot with Jackson. He has more talent than BM and Sanders. He can be great or lose his whole life with this recreational drug crap. I am sorry I have no idea why anyone does that, let alone a professional athlete who has more to lose. It is just plain stupid to me. It gains you nothing. Yeah I know...."It is so cool to be high!"...ah,yeh right.
Merriweather is going nowhere, it would leave us with no depth. As for Sanders being an overpaid backup, we often play 3 safeties. It's like saying our #3 WR is an overpaid backup.
Arrington is the #3 CB, why waste his talents by moving him to safety?

Because DW Toys has been waiting for years to drive the bus out of Foxboro that everyone wants to put Meriweather and Sanders on.

Of course, as much as I loved "Eugene My Man Wilson" in his first season (particularly on that hit on ... uhh, forget which Colts receiver), he really fell off the map quickly.

More re-written history...
First off, he suffered a major injury in the SB his first year in 2003.
In the 2004 SB, Wilson broke his arm similar to what happened to Rodney.
It was only after the 2nd injury that Wilson's play went downhill.
I think what is surprising me is the lack of real training camp depth at safety now... I'm probably missing some udfa's, but all I see are BM, Chung, Sanders, and Brown. Now, I'm fine with those four being our four regular season safeties (I'm fairly optimistic about Brown as well), but with this preseason being the way it is, the likelihood that we'll see all four healthy for week one is low. I'd rather have a fifth solid guy in camp for that inevitability.
For that reason, the idea of trading Meriweather is extra strange. No way we're carrying three safeties on this team with the packages we run. Chung and Sanders are almost guaranteed to miss a game or two also.
Ross Ventrone and Josh Barrett say "HI"
Ventrone is a UDFA, but Barrett is a FS whom the Pats got off waivers last year from Denver. He was injured all year, but he's got a lot of skill and many people were surprised that BB broke the "unwritten" rule that you don't claim a player that another team is trying to put on IR..

I have seena little bit of Ventrone at camp this year. Pure energy from what I have seen. Looks like a gamer. Could be a good special teamer.
