Default Ochocinco playing on 1 year deal not extension

Chad Ochocinco - WR - Patriots

Updating a previous item, the Patriots did not work out a new contract with Chad Ochincoco after acquiring him on July 28.
A faulty report claimed Ocho signed a new three-year deal, but he's still working on his Bengals contract. He is due $6 million this season, and is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2012. The Pats will likely wait to see his production level before addressing the 33-year-old's deal, if they do at all.

This has cap repercussions no doubt. I was wondering why we didn't have a few extra million

thoughts?

I like the move I like Ocho very much and basically he has to prove himself here before a 2 yr extension.

edit- Ocho is the kind of guy that if he is happy here he will surely stay

6 million is an awful lot, I just hope he does well and we do extend him

I'm sure a deal is ready if we need the cap space cleared.

Why make the assumption that the patriots have made more than a 1 year commitment to either Ocho or Haynsworth?

It would be odd to see Chad making $6M when Branch and Welker are making a lot less. I think Bedard is just going by what the NFLPA site has up for salaries for players now that it is back in business. No reason to think they will not restructure. Thing is until they do they are not on the hook for dead cap. So maybe his restructure gets filed when they are sure he is healthy and starting in week 1... His restructure would likely involve $5M of his $6M becoming a signing bonus payable immediately and the addition of one or two years at $2-3M with some incentives or escalators.

As for Haynesworth, no need to restructure him. His numbers are fine for the next two years. He is due another option bonus in 2013 (according to rotoworld) so if he makes it here he could be extended some time in 2012. Otherwise, again, no dead cap on these deals which essentially makes them prove it deals.

I think that they are staying with the one year deal for now so that Ocho Cinco doesn't miss any practices. If they redid his contract, he would not have started practicing until yesterday.

What with acquiring a new system and working with a new QB, Ocho Cinco needs every single practice he can get in. He is still far behind the curve.

MG - There is no assumption regarding Chad. It was reported that the Pats and he had reached an agreement on a contract extension and that is what facilitated the trade. It was also stated that the new contract wouldn't be signed until after the CBA was signed because it would have meant that Chad would have had to wait to start practicing.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for the Pats to have an agreement with Chad to submit the contract at a later date if it was needed to provide the Pats with Cap relief.
