Good point. And it's hard for them to pull some backloading of the contract shananigans since it would only be a short-term deal. Probably a 3-year deal at most.

There has to be other teams besides the Steelers solliciting his services. The fact that he's talking to the Pats shows that he wants to stay here in New England out of preference. I can't imagine that no other teams have inquired. But if this is our biggest competition, then this is about the best it could work out for us.

Sign Light, then wait until the first preseason game when it becomes obvious that Roethlisburger is going to get killed without a significant upgrade, and then squeeze the Steelers for a 1st round pick

The Steelers have traditionally had hogs up front that are excellent run blockers. Matt Light is many things, but a strong run blocker is not one of them.
