Default Suggestion for the NFL- opinion only!

Since the draft, the NFL has been in a dead zone except for court hearings and "secret talks". The NFL "brand" which in teh past has always been front and center with various off season activities is taking a hit IMHO.

So here is something that can liven things up for the NFL and give the avid fans something to really think about and enjoy.

Hold a supplemental draft, on 7/9/11, of all the players who were not drafted and want to enter(UDFA's). This would include new players who didn't declare for the April draft (Ohio State players) as example.

Give each team 2 5th round values, 2 6th round value, and 2 7th round value picks based on the April draft order, without trades(Patritos do not get Oakland pick). These additional picks would not count againts next years draft picks. A team can always pass if they dont want to select a player.

OK, thats the idea. Should this be passed on to the NFL powers to be? Or, should it be canned before someone actually takes it seriously.

Why would any team pass on drafting with free picks? Why assign a value? I'm missing something here.

The reason for assigning a value is the type and cost of contract.

For example: The Patriots draft Mark Herzlich with their second assigned 5th round pick. Herzlich would be established as a late 5th round value and his contract would be in accordance with that.

Remember when the draft went 13 + rounds? This will give teams a chance to reevaluate the players not drafted and maybe get a Troy Brown as the Patriots did with a 10th round pick.

The supplemental draft is a part of the CBA, so your suggestion can't be done.

Right now there is no CBA so the NFL can do anything that they want, right?

Everything that has been done or not done has been the choice of the NFL since 3/1.

The league has made the assertion I posted, asserting the supplemental draft to be seated in the CBA:

Quote:
Citing Page 46 of the 2006 CBA, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Packer Report: “If a player who was not eligible for the Draft in any League Year becomes eligible after the date of the Draft, he will be eligible to be selected in a supplemental Draft, if the League elects to conduct such a Draft.”

I don't see it piquing much interest. I don't know 99% of the college players who aren't drafted and i expect it wouldn't be very thrilling. I never care for the undrafted free agents we bring in anyways (even though one typically makes the team), and I never care about the current supplemental draft (albeit a different format from what you've described).

'A' for effort.

Eh, we don't exactly see much of the NFL "brand" this time of the year anyway. The only major offseason activity between February and July, the NFL Draft, went off as normal.

A supplemental draft may not exactly be legal at this point in time. The 2011 draft was stipulated to in the prior CBA, so that was fine. But any further drafts, supplemental or otherwise, may be a bad idea for anyone not wanting to be beaten in court.

Well, even the NFL is not so powerful such that they can violate the laws of the United States of America. So being that the very concept of a draft is a pretty big violation, they would probably be unwise to do it.

Now I ain't saying the FBI would raid league offices if they did hold a draft. But they would be sued out of their minds.

So an undrafted player would get a better slotted contract than a drafted player? He'd make more than Carter or Williams. That makes no sense.
