Until this season, his '85 Bears (15-1) have been considered by many as having the greatest season ever.

He's obviously selfish and jealous and protective of that... the Patriots are already the greatest regular season team of all time... he's lost that... only if they fail to win the Super Bowl does he retain some shred of football immortality.

his 85/86 bears were one of two nfl teams to win 18 games (with the niners the year before). he doesn't want to let go of that distinction. he's a jerk, but not wanting to give up that distinction is only human.

Patriots have a chance today to tie a record held (in a tie) by Ditka's best team -- wins a season.

That's a significant record, and I think Ditka is just doing a bit of Mercury Morris.

Unless the Patriots win today and again in 2 weeks, the 07 Pats team isn't even in the top 3 of the franchise (behind the 01,03,04 editions) let alone the league. Can we rest the Bears, 49ers, Patriots debate for after the Super Bowl?
