I feel the same as the announcers do. Taylor was there when everyone said, "Jimmy Johnson will save us!," he was there when they said, "Nick Saban will lead us to contention!," and now they're saying, "Parcells will do it!" I don't think there's any chance he sticks with Miami. He's a veteran player who has poured his guts out for his franchise throughout his career. I think he's going for the ring now. He'll make hi money no matter where he goes, so I think he'll be with a better team next year. I hope it's ours.

Taylor won't be going to the Patriots anyways, despite all of our best wishes. The Dolphins learned their lesson with Welker in trading a guy to a division rival, and Taylor is a superstar. Parcells isn't Randy Mueller, either.

Parcells is a much better evaluator of talent than everyone in Miami over the last decade or so.

As such Miami will no longer be our farm team for guys like Welker, Evans, Seau, etc.. etc...

Even so one can't rule anything out in terms of Taylor asking for and getting his release. I'd say Parcells wouldn't do that knowing that he'd likely want to move to a contender such as the Patriots, but I don't think Parcells wants guys who don't want to be on the team either.

I suppose one couldn't completely rule out a trade. Taylor's getting older and guys like Parcells and Belichick know part of their success comes in having players who are willing to play hard for them. That comes from treating players with respect.

In the short term letting players go hurts, but over the long term guys are willing to play for a team where they know they'll be treated fairly.

I'd put Asante's situation in that category - yes the Pats could have forced the issue and refused to budge on a no-franchise agreement. But the Pats also know that's not living up to the spirit of the agreement with the NFLPA - and they also know that it's not in their interest to force veteran players to remain here.

Frachising Moss next year would be something that I think the team wouldn't want to do - that would ensure that no one would ever again agree to a one year below market deal, and Belichick wouldn't want to hamstring himself like that.

Parcells won't trade Jason Taylor to NE, he's not that stupid. If Taylor ask to be traded to a contender they'd ship him out to a contending team in the AFC long before they'd send him to NE.

I was hoping Taylor would end up playing rush OLB for NE in 2008, but I don't see it happening now.

I'm not sure Parcells would be quite as short sighted as you seem to be.

Unlike some fans, Parcells realizes that the Dolphins, even with Brown back next year - and yes, even with Taylor and Zach Thomas - it's unlikely the Dolphins are going to the Super Bowl next season....

Or the season after that.

That means that, yes - he is re-building a team.

And how do you do that in the NFL?

Cut payroll - draft for quantity hoping to find quality - and tap into free agency for quality depth guys that don't cost a ton of money.

How do you gain better draft picks? Trade down, and trade aging veteran players while they are still worth something. Guys like Taylor and Thomas are likely not going to be on your hopeful Super Bowl roster 3 + years from now. Keeping them might give you a better record next season - but you're still not a contender for the SB.

Parcells isn't really expecting to dethrone the Patriots next season. Or probably the next.

He'd let Taylor go for the best package available via trade - all things being equal, he'd prefer to have Taylor go elsewhere - but if I'm Parcells, knowing that Jason Taylor isn't going to be with the Patriots 4-5 years from now but the draft picks he might gain from the Pats likely would be, strategically it makes sense.

So if the Patriots wanted Taylor and offered the best possible package, I don't think I say "no" if I'm Parcells.

Taylor isn't without cards himself. He can't force a trade or force them to relinquish his rights - but he can retire outright.

So if you're Parcells, and have a choice between Taylor retiring and getting nothing for him - or trading him to a conference rival and getting something, knowing it's not going to affect your long-term goals - in fact, taking away a conference rival's draft picks actually helps you, you wouldn't do that WHY?

Why would anyone in their right mind think that there was, or is, ANY chance the dolphins would trade Jason Taylor to the Patriots? They got F'd on the Welker thing, and this would be even worse. There has NEVER been a chance that this fantasy would come true, no matter how many of us would love it to.

Obviously the notion that teams will not trade within the same division is a myth first of all. Beyond that I'm not sure how many Dolphins fans you'd find who would suggest that Welker would have made a big difference to that team this year. Doesn't that make them better off taking a young 2nd round draft pick (and didn't they get their punter with our 7th too?)

Beyond that Parcells didn't make that trade so no one's going to blame him for Welker.

And as I pointed out before, Taylor DOES hold some cards here.

Let's say Taylor decides that the one and only team he wants to play for is the New England Patriots (which is not such a stretch of the imagination as he and Brady are very good friends, and Taylor wants a Ring very badly).

Taylor can present Parcells with 2 options. 1.) Trade me for fair market value to the Patriots (assuming they were willing) and get some draft picks for me or 2.) I'm going to retire and you're going to get nothing for me.

Since Parcells knows he has a big rebuilding project ahead of him, and likely won't dethrone the Patriots in the 2 years or so that Taylor has left, with or without Taylor on the Patriots what decision do you think he'd make?

Do you think he would prefer to get some draft picks for Taylor - or nothing for Taylor?
