I mean, we all know exactly what he's going to say, so why not just have some junior PR flak write it up, so #12 can go spend a little more quality time teaching his toddlers to watch game film?

Of course, let's think about the reporters' time, too -- why bother making them come to Foxborough? The media relations office can just email all of the players' statements right into their inboxes -- in fact, if the reporter wanted to give them the passwords to their paper or website's blogging platform, a Patriots employee could just go ahead and write up and post all of the press conference nuggets right on Reiss' Pieces, Extra Points, et al.

Would be a whole lot easier for everyone involved.
He's not saying the same thing every time, he's responding to specific questions. Part of what "they" want is just to put his face and voice on TV for ratings.

But he responded to whether he'd played in soldier field, their preparations given it's a short week, and how they're doing something for Peppers and said they are one of the best defenses they'll face. Also talked about how he played in Champaign but not Soldier Field. Little things like this make for a news story.

He didn't issue a "statement".

Personal fave line - "I don't know anything about [A (or B [or C])), all I know is that we are playing the [D] this week." Been too long since I last heard it...

You'd have to ask them about that. I don't know. Right now, I'm just trying to get our team ready to play the Bears.

To be honest, most sports writers (I don't even want to call them journalists) are a bunch of unimaginative hacks who ask the most predictable questions and are rarely ever properly prepared. They're looking for soundbites, not answers, and the players understand that. The rookies might not, but they learn quickly enough.

So if the sports writers are going to mail it in, so will the players, as they should. BB is a prime example of it. He'll be so unbelievably bland and not take the bait these schmucks lay out there, but the minute someone asks him a real legit question, he's a fountain of knowledge. Then some idiot will ask him if he wants to kick Rex's butt and he tunes out.

Yeah, you never know which way folks will take a thread, eh?

Both Brady and Belichick can give extremely worthwhile answers to good questions, when they get them. And Brady did have plenty of good answers today (nothing great, just good). I just think that, given the chance to speak about the amazing year he's having -- courtesy of a reporter who I assume is new to the job -- he very skillfully got the conversation on-topic (even if the guy then asked a similar follow-up). Exemplary leadership.

Well, yes, and then there's the tidbits that keep me listening.

When he talked about Tedy Bruschi on Monday night it obviously came from the heart. Tedy's personality, Tedy's smile. No. BB is certainly not a "player's coach" but it's at times like that that it becomes clear that he's not just playing chess with live pieces. He loves his players and appreciates them as people.

Actually he is a players coach. He just doesn't waste their time and his blowing smoke up their skirts and fluffing egos. He also never throws them under the bus. He spreads the credit and blame with a broad brush and always includes the coaching staff in the latter. So many so called players coaches toss those players to the media wolves at the first sign of trouble to deflect attention from their own incompetence.

Depends what you mean by "players coach". You're absolutely right how fickle some of those guys are -- and that what matters more is being honest and direct with players, keeping any criticisms he has of individuals out of the media, being respectful even of guys with whom he parts company (see under Thomas, AD). But he doesn't do the Dick Vermeil love-bombing stuff either.
