And Andy, why does Shula need to feel relevant? He's the winningest coach ever and one of the all time greats.
I don't know why he needs to feel relevant. You would have to ask him why, but it is obvious that he does. He is embarrassing himself in order to get attention. Its very sad.

Not wanting to risk embarassing the Jets being up by 72 at the end of the 3rd quarter by *gasp* playing football, they send the backups out to play frisbee on the field for the last 15 minutes of the game.

Everyone is therefore happy because the Patriots chose not to embarrass the Jets by running up the score further.

Seriously - What do you think the pointspread will be going into that game?

I predict it will be an all time record.

No, but Shula doesn't have to do an interview with everyone under the sun who wants to ask him about what he thinks about a team going undefeated in in MIDSEASON.

The guy's latest interview was with the New York Post. He really couldn't turn down an interview with the NY Post? The other 100 interviews he has already given haven't been enough?

My point is, he is a media whore.

When/if the Pats are 13-0 or 14-0, I have no problem with Shula getting off the treadmill and making the media rounds.

But at this point in the season it's a bit attention whorish. You have to admit, the guy kind of sort of maybe likes the spotlight. Just a wee bit.

Call him a media whore or whatever you want, but it's not like he demanded to get on a radio or in a paper to make his comments heard. He was asked to do an interview and he did so like a gentleman, big deal. Not every coach is a ********ed stiff who makes the media's job a living nightmare.

That is competely wrong. He was interviewed, and decided to make a well-thought out pointedly controversial comment so that he would be in the news. He has even contradicted it since. Since that article was written he has been all over every facet of the media.
It was a very lame attempt to draw attention to himself. At the same time it was a lazy and unscrupulous attempt to try and belittle the accomplishments of the Patriots in order to make his accomplishments seem somehow better.
Shula has a pattern of this. Ripping Saban because he took his sons job away. Does young Shula need daddy to throw stones at the guy who took away the job he was doing poorly at? No, but Don Shula needed to be in the spotlight because no one pays attention to him any more.

Ultimately after spending 25 more years winning nothing he wants people to remember the short time he was a winner. The problem is he is making himself look like a moron doing it.

No, that would be the soon to be 0-16 2007 Miami Dolphins.

Someone already said this, but I think it would be even more funny to see Brady take a knee the whole second half. And THEN with 1 second left throw a 99 yard bomb to Moss. I would probably piss my pants laughing.

Aqua - are you really defending Shula? Yes I agree with you that he was asked about it, he didn't ask for attention, but what he said made absolutely no sense. How is THIS year tainted? I don't agree that previous years are either, but if you said they were I could at least understand why you would be saying that.

But I think it would be hillarious if we get 35+ points in the first half and then have Brady play only on our side of the field in the second half. Then have Cassell come in when we cross the 50, let the play clock run down to 1, take a knee three times and then punt.

That would have me crying from laughing so hard. All we will hear is how "classless" they are for embarrising the Jets and making a mockery of the NFL. The hypocrisy from the talking heads would be classic!
... and after the third knee, they roll the ball to Mangini.

a. Kick the 1 point
b. Go for the 2
c. Go for the 2 and then go for the on-side kick to pile even more points on their pathetic arses

I'll go for c
Another interesting question: what would the Pats do if the score were 68-0?

"Did so like a gentleman?" No one is going to equate granting interviews to the NY Post with knighthood anytime soon, sorry.

Shula could just as easily and respectfully decline an interview. He didn't and doesn't. Because he likes attention.

Btw, how many times did you see Hank Aaron doing interviews when Bonds was getting ready to break his record?
