We're ok for now, phone lines were jammed for a bit though.

It was scary. It started out as a good sized shake, then subsided a bit, then picked up steam again. The whole thing lasted well over 20 seconds which is an eternity for earthquakes. My wife, already holding our 4 month old, went straight to the nearest doorjam. I yanked my 3 year old out of her highchair, almost ripping the tray off in the process and joined my wife in the doorjam. The noise from all the rattling spooked the older one, for the rest of the evening she kept asking if "the noise was coming back", but she went to bed all smiles. Fortunately, we had no damage whatsoever. We had only one picture tip over on a desk. Nothing came off the walls. Nothing fell out of cabinets.

My wife was here for the Loma Prieta quake in '89 (the infamous World Series quake). That was over 7.0. She said she tried walking down the hall to where her folks were, but almost fell over and that putting her hands on the walls for support was pointless because the walls were swaying back and forth! I can't imagine what that would be like.

Regards,
Chris

I just got a call from my sister out of state, and then walls and ceiling started jumping around accompanied by that infamous rumblin sound. I said to my sis on the cell "eathquake, earthquake, gotta go." I immeadiately thought of my kids at their mothers home, and headed outside just as it subsided. Gave them a call, its was their first earthquake experience a little shook up but they were fine. Came back in and started planning what to do if another one came. Been in CA for about 10 years, first one for me.

It was a pretty good earthquake - I live about 20 miles from the epicenter and the house shook for a long time. Didn't notice any aftershocks though. Nothing broke or fell so all is well. Scared the heck out of the dog and cat though!

I'm originally from Connecticut so earthquakes are a new phenomena. They're kind of scary but they are over pretty quick (at least the shaking part) there is always the trail of destruction to deal with after they're finished.

All good up here in the city.

That was kind of a long one though, Chris in Sunnyvale probably had the most sahking going on last night with the epicenter being in San Jose. Glad to hear everything is OK.
Seems like we always get them this time of year.
