Default Brady threw only 1 TD against Miami in the second half

How can a quarterback on pace to break the season scoring record who scores only 1 touchdown in an entire half of an NFL game against the worst team in the league be running up the score? Especially when he was subbed out specifically to keep him scoreless in the second half?

Yet, a Colts fan here has said that Peyton Manning threw only seven 4th quarter touchdowns to set his record in 2004, which to him means that Brady is being cheap by scoring in the 4th quarter 5 times this year. Also, if there are any mentions of Brady running up the score, they should realize he could have scored 10 touchdowns by matching his first-half performance.

I will tell you how, by throwing a 4th QTR TD with 8 to play.

ONE TIME did Manning throw a 4th qtr td with his team leading, ONCE. Yet, in '04, and even TODAY, we hear charges of "stat padding", and only caring about records. It's simply not the case. That's all.

So, what's supposed to happen then? Should the Pat's let a team catch up before Brady is allowed to throw for TD's late in a game? Does Belichick need to hold back the offense and keep running into 8 man fronts so that they go "3 and out" until their oppenents get the score close? Should Brady be taking a knee with 7 minutes to go in games with a big lead and just hand the ball over to the other team and let them do what they want?

Bottom line is Brady is making everyone who trashed him as a "system QB" or "on the downside of his career" look like morons. The fact that he is putting up record numbers scares all of you and you're only defense now is to play the "classless" card and whine about running up scores.

Pathetic.

Where did I ever say they were running up the score?? As stated, I don't care, it is the way the actions are defended, and the logic used that is troublesome

If the Colts had done something like this, we would never hear the end of it. Hell, people still bring up '04, like this was a common occurance for the Colts, it wasn't.

My bad, the Awesomes do it so well, that I couldn't remember what game we were speaking of.

Dallas game: Could have handled it differently, no need to tack one on, but not necessarily "running it up".

Miami Game: Up 21, 8 minutes to play, bringing in your starter, after he had stated he was ready to go put on street clothes. That, IMO, was running it up.

In the end, I guess you have to take the stance that if the other team is trying, then I think it gives you the greenlight to play until the opponent surrenders. I think there ARE better ways tio handle it though.

I think back to the opener. Colts up 34-10. N.O. still trying to get that elusive offensive TD, and Brees keepr throwing. Last season, Doss got hurt inside of 4 minutes, cause the Skins kept playing, even though the game was out of reach. So anyway, I was so happy to see Brees get picked, and MattG take it back for 6, served them right.

The Dallas T.O. is overblown. Hell, you guys took one with 2:13 to play. Maybe they were ticked at you. Bottom line on that one is, with 1:48 to play, and no T.O.'s, inside the 10, and 2nd down, Dallas quits if you do.

You either ignore the circumstances or you aren't aware of them. NE was down their top 2 RBs and none of the others can be counted on to give you a probable shot at getting even one first down against a stacked defense. Because of this NE had to pass.

In addition to that, Cassel had just thrown two of thw worst passes by a NE QB all season on successive plays, one of which lead directly to Miami earning 6 points with no time coming off the clock. Are you really going to leave that guy on the field?

In addition to that, NE did not stop Miami once in the second half from driving deep into NE territory on defense, so it wasn't as if a 21 point lead was a 100% certainty - I don't care about probabilities here. You don't close up shop on offense with 8:00 minutes left unless the game is without a doubt over.

So, NE couldn't just run into the line and punt because the defense wasn't playing well enough. Their chances of running the clock down running the ball were minimal because the RBs just weren't available. Matt Cassel wasn't going back in and if you put the #3 guy in Brady can't return.

NE did the best thing. They pushed it back to 28 and took a couple minutes off the clock and then sat Tommy down.

Frankly (and this isn't aimed directly at you) anyone who says that NE was wrong in any way is either completely biased or totally ignorant of NE's situation. Unfortunately, this is not one of those 'there are two sides to every story" things. NE didn't have the horses to run it down and Cassel and Guts weren't seeing the field again until the game was back in hand. That's it. End of story.

This is the part I don't get. The Colts were up 34-10 with the ball and 8 minutes to play. Manning still in the game and still passing.

The Pats were up 42-21 with the ball and 10+ minutes to play. Brady still in the game and still passing.

Differences:
1) Colts at home and with momentum (just scored a TD and recovered a fumble)
2) Pats on the road without momentum (opposition pick-6)

Thoughts?

The coach said it all: One more pick out of Cassell for a score and suddenly it's a two score game in Miami. There is a such thing as "upset" especially with Cassell playing QB, and the correct thing to do for any team or coach is to answer the Dolphins' little flurry with a nail in the coffin TD.
