Default PD: First Impressions – The New York Jets

The Jets were the talk of the nation this off-season where both they and their admirers in the media spouted off how they were “loaded” with talent and were “soon to be champs.”

In August they appeared on the HBO series “Hard Knocks”, an inside documentary that showed all aspects of their training camp. Most of the time was spent by Jets players and coaches boa(Please be quiet - edited)lly stating how good they were. The fire that was the Jets inevitable run to a Super Bowl championship was stoked by them getting to the AFC Championship Game and losing.

No matter that similar success didn’t necessarily follow losers of Conference Championship Games in the past. The media, and the Jets themselves, was hell bent on winning this Super Bowl for the Jets more than six months before it would be even played. This including numerous members of the Boston media, eager to tell fans how little they knew and how their hero worship of the locals would easily be humbled by the wagon that was the Jets. Who by the way, lost 31-14 the last time they saw the Patriots.

The loss of Kris Jenkins is only the cherry on top of the sundae.

They dropped their starter Marques Douglas before the season. An example of shooting the incumbant before you have a replacement, like Thomas Jones, Leon Washigton, Alan Faneca and their former CB.

Then they lost Calvin Pace. Then they had to IR Ropati Pititua last week, and now Kris is gone.

Few teams can stand losing two guys in a squad position, they have lost, or shot themselves in the foot, on four already. They didn't have much depth before, now it all falls on Bryan Thomas DE/OLB, and one part time Nose Tackle, Sione Pohua, who plattooned with Pititua after Jenkins went down last year. They "lead" the Team to a 6-7 record, including two of the six victories being against teams playing scrubs, after they had locked up Playoff berths.

One "good" thing, they now have to play all time bust Vern Gholston, he of 1/2 ST tackle in a three year career of nothingness. Maybe he will resurrect his "career". Yeah they are in fine shape!

If you discount games where the opponents weren't trying to win, the Jets under Ryan have a worse regular season record than the Bears over the same period. You can dress them up however you want and drink heavily on Sunday, but that is what Jets fans wake up next to on Monday morning.

The Jets may beat the Pats on Sunday, but it is not looking good if the refs are going to call 6-7 holding/illegal contact/pass interference penalties on the DBs (and they could have called more). The Jets success in coverage depends on locking up WRs until the blitz gets to the QB. If the refs don't give the Jets a "homefield benefit" and the WRs can get into their routes quickly, Brady should be able to have reasonable success.
