Comcast Sportstonight: Troy Brown when asked why Maroney was traded answered that:
"Maroney has done absolutely nothing for the football team over the last two seasons. Now you have depth, but Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris are well over 30 years old. What you have is Ben Jarvis Green Ellis has I think been playing well, look at the game the other day where he spelled Fred Taylor a few times. It was time to make this move to be fair to Laurence, because he wouldn't be active this weekend, and obviously wasn't going to get a lot of playing time this year."
"Ben Jarvis Green Ellis has looked better than Laurence Maroney the last two years, he didn't play a lot last year because of the running back situation, but overall he has looked better than Laurence the last couple years, and thats why the job is his, he ran well during the preseason, he ran well Sunday against Cinncinnati, and he continues to get better."
"I have listened to Fred Taylor talk about him, and I think he is a future star in the NFL. He is a good running back, he gets in between the tackles and he gets the 4 or 5 tough yards that Laurence hasn't been doing the past couple years".
Tanguay respoded that "Ben Jarvis Green Ellis simply beat out Maroney, simple as that".

BJGE averaged over 4.0 YPC against what was a pretty good Bengals run defense from last season. If he can keep that up, he'll be a solid addition.
However, I'm not sure what Brown's talking about when he says, "Ben Jarvis Green Ellis has looked better than Laurence Maroney the last two years, he didn't play a lot last year because of the running back situation, but overall he has looked better than Laurence the last couple years, and thats why the job is his, he ran well during the preseason, he ran well Sunday against Cinncinnati, and he continues to get better". That's just flat out wrong and sounds like Brown is sour that his prediction of Maroney getting cut before the season didn't pan out.

Regardless of the reasons, Maroney is gone. I like the law firm. I really. However, I am not overly comfortable with the thought of him ending up as our primary back if Taylor and Morris go down.
Having said that, though, I'll still defer to Coach in his assessment of these things, because after all, he's the coach and I'm just a fan. In Bill We Trust.

Good general rule, and nothing sufficiently glaring about this case to count as an exception.
Frankly, I find it hard to believe that BJGE could be regarded as the superior ball-carrier to Maroney based on past body of work, but if his style fits better AND he blocks better from the RB position (does he?) AND he can be used a bit as FB (he can, right?) AND he produces on STs -- why not?
I still recall a play for which I at the time incorrectly blamed Maroney's blocker (Dave Thomas IIRC). It was a KR that lasted about 70 yards, but which Maroney failed to take to the house because he tripped over his last blocker and also, as he said later, got tired on the play.
WTF? I think Maroney just didn't understand the game of football very well.

I think it's inevitable that we're going to lose several man-games from Taylor and/or Morris due to injury. Hope BJGE comes through, or hope BB has something up his cut-off hoodie sleeve.

Troy hears what goes on in that lockeroom and it hasn't sounded too good. Most of the guys like the law firm and how he carries himself. Those same guys like Maroney but think he's very immature.

If the Law-Firm runs like a power back and learns from Fred Taylor, he'll succeed under BB in this system.
I really hope our running game turns into some good old fashioned smash mouth, a bit like the Saints showed against the Vikings in the second half of game 1. We'll need it to be a championship team.

Thats an excellent post. As I fast fowarded later into the same Comcast tonight episode, Gresh asked Albert Breer, " Is it easy to say that BJGE just beat out Laurence Mauroney for carries?" Breer answered that in his opinion BJGE was fairly limited but that he played the physical style the Patriots wanted, along with Morris and Fred Taylor, that Maroney could not.
