From today's ESPN chat. He feels our pain. Or is it we who feel his pain? probably both.

How did you get over the 2007 super bowl loss as a player? I can't even do it as a fan. Tedy Bruschi (1:11 PM)
I still think about it all the time. To be so close to achieving perfection and coming up short, it was the biggest loss of my career. I feel for players like Seau, Welker, Moss, players who hadn't won Super Bowls in the past before. I am extremely fortunate to have Super Bowl wins to think about and cherish.

Unfortunately, the only thing that would make it better would be going 19-0 in another season. Something I don't expect to see in my lifetime (or 21-0 if they expand the schedule), but at least as a fan there is a CHANCE we'll see it with our team. For a former player, that opportunity will never come again.
I love the way Bruschi responded last year after Polian cited the '07 Pats SB loss as the reason you don't try for perfection. Tedy, naturally, didn't back down. The whole episode was another reason I was so happy to see the C-words lose.

"People say, 'What will you do if you don't play football?' Why would I even think of doing anything else? What would I do instead of run out in front of 80,000 people and command 52 guys and be around guys I consider brothers and be one of the real gladiators? Why would I ever want to do anything else? It's so hard to think of anything that would match what I do: Fly to the moon? Jump out of planes? Bungee-jump off cliffs? None of that s--- matters to me. I want to play this game I love, be with my wife and son, and enjoy life." - Tom Brady
I can only imagine the pain they feel. I still think about that game often - far, far, far too often - and I'm just a fan. This is their livelihood, not just their profession, but a passion. The feeling of "what-if" they must have over that game will undoubtedly stick with them for the rest of their lives.
That said, particularly now with the Colts cowardice and failure to go for perfection, that 2007 team has nothing to be ashamed of. It should be proud of its accomplishments.
