Default Smerlas comments on Sports Final

Did anybody see his comments on Meriweather last night? To paraphrase some of them:

1. Meriweather is not the answer at safety.
2. He is not particularly fast and does not get to the ball quickly.
3. He will probably stick around for a couple of years, then fade away.
4. If he weren't a 1st round pick, he would have been cut this week.

What does Smerlas have against this guy? He was constantly attacking him during the few short minutes of the segment.

if those quotes are true he was either being sarcastic, drunk, or way off. Merriweather played corner the first couple games and he's only played their in limited time in college. I thought he did quite well in the Giants game at safety, his name was being called frequently as he was around the ball making plays. If anything it was called too much and that's the fault of the front 7 for not stopping the run and causing Merriweather to come up.

Fred is a racist and because of Meriweather's somewhat thug reputation coming from U of Miami, of coruse it will be an opportunity for Fred to find a conventient black man to pick on. Being a first round choice, Meriweather is the perfect target with some light on him in which Fred can veil his comments.

Fred is a dope if he thinks he's not fast.. Next to Mike Richardson, Meriweather's name was mentioned all the time..

I heard those comments also. He was dead serious when he said them.

Sometimes Smerlas has some pretty good insights but I truly don't agree with him here.

Looking back on the past 6 years, I haven't seen too many safeties come through here with the tools he has.

He's plenty fast.

The kid came in and spent most of his time at CB getting acclimated to that spot, and then had to reverse gears and get acclimated to safety in the Pats style of defense.

He'll definitely be better than James Sanders. So I don't know where Fred got this from.

Probably the bad series he had against the Giants.

Fred is not a racist. He has a lot of connections with players, coaches and management on this team and if he said it he said it because he believes it, and someone told him that. One of Fred's best friends is Jack Mula, who negotiates contracts for the team. While we are all rooting for Meriweather, he hasn't really done anything yet, so it's hard to say that Fred is wrong at this point.

Exactly so how can Fred make a statement like that????

No one can say anything good or bad.

Fred has more inside info on this team than just about anyone in the NE press. Last year, before training camp, he mentioned the positive buzz in the organization about Maroney. This year he probably is aware of some scuttlebutt about Meriweather. Fred is a big time homer and friend of BB and he has no reason to criticize Meriweather unless he is aware of something. Let's hope he's wrong.

That is a pretty bad label to to hang on anyone without any proof. Perhaps you can come up with that proof or apologize for using that term without it.
