Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The New York Jets signed first-round pick Darrelle Revis on Wednesday, ending the touted cornerback's lengthy holdout.

The two sides have agreed to a six-year contract worth $36 million, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
New York Jets

Revis, selected 14th overall after New York traded up to draft him, missed 22 practices -- including Wednesday's single practice -- and the team's preseason opener last Friday against Atlanta since training camp started July 27.

"We're glad it's over," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said Wednesday night.

The Jets expect Revis to compete for a starting job at cornerback, once he gets up to speed with the defense. Revis was considered one of the best overall cornerbacks in the draft, and had an outstanding college career at Pittsburgh, finishing with 129 tackles and eight interceptions.

Tannenbaum said Revis had already received his playbook from coach Eric Mangini and would participate in the team's walkthrough Friday. It was uncertain if Revis would play in the Jets' game against Minnesota on Friday night.

"He'll play when Eric feels he's ready," Tannenbaum said.

Top 16 can sign up to six, next 16 can sign up to five, rest of draft (2nd round and later) can sign up to four.

You just can't say enough about the Jets front office. A class organization thru and thru.

Seems like the Jets caved in that its a 4 year deal if he plays just over 1/3rd of the time or more.

So much for Mangini being tough... seems pointless to me - either play tough or give in early to get the guy in camp. Mangini's kept Revis out and now set a poor precedent for his organization, showing that top draft picks can get defacto 4 year deals by sitting out.

REAL REVIS DEAL IS LOW ON FLUFF

Though it's been reported as a six-year, $36 million package, the contract negotiated by cornerback Darrelle Revis has a base value of six years and $32 million.

And, as we understand it, that number reflects real money, with little or no fluff.

The six-year deal, which the Jets wanted to do, easily voids to a four-year deal, which the Jets previously didn't want to do. The deal automatically reduces to four years if in any of the first four seasons Revis participates in at least 35 percent of the defensive snaps.

The four-year value is $16 million, with $11 million in guaranteed money (which includes the 2007 base salary, which technically isn't guaranteed but as a practical matter is always paid).

But the Jets can buy back the fifth and sixth years. For $5 million guaranteed in year five and $11 million guaranteed in year six the Jets can get back the final two seasons.

If the Jets choose not to buy back years five and six, Revis hits the open market and the Jets will not apply the franchise tag or the transition tag.

The year six number can reduce to $9 million and can increase to $15 million, as the result of a point system based primarily on playing time. Interestingly, interceptions are not a factor as to any aspect of the deal.

As we see it, it's a win-win. But we can't help but wonder whether the deal couldn't have gotten done before the start of camp.
