Practice notes
Posted by Albert Breer at 10:57 am

That practice didn’t exactly look like September. The workout was in full pads and one’s presence was either because A) the player wasn’t getting many reps in normal sessions or B) the player was a rookie. Only 30 guys attended. Here’s a positional look at who was there:

QB: Matt Gutierrez
RB: Quinton Smith
WR: C.J. Jones, Chris Dunlap, Bam Childress, Kelvin Kight
TE: Matt Kranchick, Garrett Mills
OL: Mike Elgin, Brian Barthelmes, Corey Hilliard, Gene Mruckowski, Clint Oldenburg
DL: Kenny Smith, Rashad Moore, Zach West, Le Kevin Smith, Kareem Brown
LB: Corey Mays, Kyle Bissinger, Oscar Lua, Justin Rogers
DB: Willie Andrews, Mel Mitchell, Brandon Meriweather, Mike Richardson, Larry Anam, Dante Wesley, Gemara Williams
K: None
P: Tom Malone, Danny Baugher

Here’s some more from what we saw:

– Childress looked, quite simply, like a man among boys this morning. He made a diving catch on the sideline and, working primarily in the slot, used short-area quickness and moves that the DBs, really, had little answer for. He’s doing everything it takes, again, to make the team. But like in years past, and with the overhaul at receiver, it may not be enough.

– Today’s workout was the first practice we’ve seen Meriweather at safety, playing the weakside and paired with Willie Andrews. Truth is, Meriweather looks good at all the secondary position. But you can see the instincts he has for play on the back line, both in route recognition and reaction time.

– Baugher spent plenty of time working on holding, even without a kicker there. Matt Cassel figures to fill the role if Baugher makes the team. But ultimately, the Patriots would probably like the punter to be the holder, since it allows more time in practice for the players to work on it.

Richard Seymour and Kyle Brady were spotted on the upper practice field going through agility drills with a trainer. Both looked limber in the little bit of shuffle work you could see.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck." RAH

In Indiana they had the Cutters.

In Tampa, we'll have the Cutees.
