Default Another CB not named Asante gets paid

Asante might re-think the whole "coming to camp in two weeks" thing after seeing this.

BEARS PAY PEANUT

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Chicago Bears have struck a deal with cornerback Charles Tillman on a contract extension.

It's a six-year extension worth $41.5 million, and the contract includes $18.5 million in guaranteed money. Tillman is signed through 2013.

Last month, the Bears signed cornerback Nathan Vasher to a six-year, $28 million contract, with $14 million in bonuses and a total payout of $15.6 million through 2008. Vasher is under contract through 2012.

Still waiting for a long-term deal (and we hope he's not holding his breath) is linebacker Lance Briggs, the team's franchise player. Briggs has been tendered a one-year deal worth $7.2 million, but he has not yet accepted the offer.

The big difference being that this is a contract extension, not a negotiation overshadowed by the franchise tag.

Didn't Tillman die in Iraq?

Well, whatever. Samuel can't sign anything but the one year offer with us until after the season so it's moot.

Charles Tillman is a better player, and more proven, than Asante Samuel. The Patriots made a fair offer to Asante. From the numbers I've read, the Pats contract was far closer to appropriate than the asinine $$$ Asante's camp is clamoring for.

if Asante can play like he did most of last year..Tillman is not better. but that cant be proven yet. Samuels been great for 1 year. Tillman has been very good for 2-3 years. i would take Very good for longer time than 1 year great. Not that Asante can do anything about that but if he shuts up and plays well 1 more year then he'll get paid.

I'm now completely comfortable with NOT paying Samuel.

A player of calibre is not worth what he thinks he is. I've been a Samuel proponent, in a luke-warm sense. The Pats can re-tool through the draft (or FA) much more economically.

He is simply not viable, in comparison to other options.

I was on his side, but no longer. I cannot fathom is value at his prescribed salary. DB, if made a priority, particularly with the Pats history of economy, is easily transfused.

If I remember correctly, Pat Tillman died in Afghanistan due to friendly fire

Actually Samuel was good for a half a year...yes, NOT one year but a half. Do you think after 8 games anyone seriously thought of franchising him??
