Call me crazy, but I think They are quite alike. Both went to the U of Miami. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Fred was tall and lean, but covered a lot of field. I don't know if he was the type to slide down into the slot and cover like Meriweather can, because he didn't have the quick hip-turn of a CB (like Meriweather does). He was a very good player, but I think Meriweather is a better athlete.

I think Meriweather will be a very good player on this team, contributing quickly in sub packages. His cover skills and willingness to play bigger than his size make him a good fit for a team that values versatility. I just hope he is healthy and signed to start camp.

I havent seen enough of Meriweather to make a comparison,but methinks BB ,who has coached secondary players before,has watched some tape of this player and believes the guy can play.That is good enough for me.I have an expectation that this player will merit a major upgrade (monetary type)within two or three years....

I'm not sure Marion had the same stomping ability as Merriweather

I loved the Pats defensive backfield of Fred Marion, Roland James, Ronny Lippett and Raymond Clayborn.

Fred Marion was an outstanding player. If I recall, he always seemed to make a game-changing play weather it was an INT or a forcing a key fumble. He was a pretty darn good tackler. He always had around 2-5 interceptions a year. He wasn't much of a blitzing safety (thus the reason he was a FS) Rolan James was the hitter in that group. He seemed like a heady player.

My gut tells me that Merriweather brings a little more power and speed to the game than Marion did. From everything that I have read, he is a physically gifted player with very good ball skills and excellent football smarts.

If numbers are any indication, if Merriweather can play 9 years with the Pats, finish with 29 career interceptions, go to a Pro Bowl, a SB (and win-unlike Fred) and average 80 tackles a year, I'll take that.

Just like to add a quick comment about Fred Marion, about 8 or 9 years ago I was on a business trip to Orlando when me and my co-workers blew out to go play golf (Falcon's Fire, great course). There were 3 of us, so they hooked us up with a 4th, sure enough it was Fred Marion. We had a great time, he was a soft spoken gentlemen, but really opened up when he found out we were from the Boston area and were Patriot's fans. He duffed his first drive, then went on to shoot lights out. He said that he always felt very fortunate that he never sustained any serious injuries, and that he felt blessed that he could play the game of golf and move around without pain (unlike many of the people he played with). It just so happened that day Falcon's Fire was taking pictures of all the foursomes on the first tee (promotional photos etc), well of course after the round I went and bought the picture, which I now proudly display along with the autographed score card he gave us. So while this doesn't really go along with the rest of this thread, just thought I'd pass it along.
