July 19, 2007 Pats moves
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
In a move that was expected, the Patriots signed veteran linebacker Chad Brown today.
The 37-year-old Brown is set for his third stint with the team. He spent the 2005 season with the Patriots, and was with the club at the start of 2006 training camp but was cut before the season began. Brown played eight games for the Steelers last season.
The Patriots also released three players: cornerback Antwain Spann, receiver Jonathan Smith and tight end Jake Nordin. All three were longer shots to make the roster.

Re: Chad Brown signed; Spann, Nordin, J. Smith cut
Wasn't Chad Brown injured last yeah in TC and that was at least part of the reason he was cut? Just trying to figure out the motivation of brining him in, clearly Woods just got some more competition.
Re: Chad Brown signed; Spann, Nordin, J. Smith cut
This LB core is deep and experienced with Brown back. I think we'll like him alot more as a bench/role player than a starter. If he and Izzo make it through camp and make the 53 it doesn't bode well for the young guys (Woods, Mays, Rogers et al). The playing time just won't be there.
Re: Chad Brown signed; Spann, Nordin, J. Smith cut
FYI, while fans pretty much universally derided and denegrated Brown for his 2005 season, BB is one who didn't. He is on record for feeling bad because he had to use Brown as an ILB when he was best suited to play outside. He felt Brown took one for the team. He never b!tched or complained.
For the record, Brown had an excellent season as an OLB just 2 seasons ago in Seattle. I think we will all be better off just to wait and see what happens. I don't think BB added Brown just to see the average age of our LB GO UP.

Exactly.
He had the same wrist injury as Bruschi (that knocked Bruschi out for all of the preseason and Week 1).
Brown suffered it early in camp and never really came back before he was cut. So it wasn't as much of an issue of him not being good enough for the team as it was him being injured and falling behind Woods.
Brown also was with the Steelers for a good part of last season.
