Default Adam Schefter on Meriweather injury and Meriweather VS Gonzalez

THE MEDICAL ON MERIWEATHER
Patriots coach Bill Belichick would rather coach in another Pro Bowl than discuss the whereabouts of any of his missing players. But Patriots first-round draft pick Brandon Meriweather was not on the field at minicamp this week due to a hamstring injury.

Meriwhether injured his hamstring over three weeks ago and the Patriots have been extremely careful about not rushing him back on to the field. They held him out of this week's minicamp, though Meriweather was in the team's training facility going through rehab.

One reason the Patriots are being so cautious with Meriweather is that they do not want to see a repeat of last year, when second-round draft pick Chad Jackson suffered a hamstring injury early on that lingered throughout the season. Jackson never seemed to be able to get back to full speed, and New England wants to ensure that it gives Meriwhether every opportunity to get healthy as soon as possible so that it can use him at safety, often covering the other team's slot receiver.

And here's a matchup to watch that was cooked up on draft day. The Patriots drafted Meriweather to cover slot receivers and the Colts' first-round pick was slot receiver Anthony Gonzalez. The Patriots and Colts have had some great showdowns recently, and Meriweather and Gonzalez could wind up having some as early as this season.

AHHHHH!!! FREAKIN' HAMSTRINGS!!!

I am not saying that the sky is falling just fed up with hearing about hamstring injuries!!! This better not be two years in a row where our rook isn't on the field throughout the season because of a FREAKIN' HAMSTRING!

Meriweather is already way ahead of Jackson who participated in minicamp last year - and looked great - as Meriweather's was several weeks ago.

im glad we took that approach..we saw how Wilson went on IR because a hammy..we saw how CJ got hurt and then other injuries occured

hammies are tricky..u need them to be 100% healthy before u play a sport like football or track because once u explode..the hammies gonna get ripped up. i had a hamstring injury once..it started as a pull..i couldnt really run but then i tried anyways, made it worse because i tried accelerating to my top speed and OW

also saw what happened to Pass..like he got shot in the hammy.

experience made this an easy move..hopefully he'll be ready for TC and and show up in top shape and health and compete with Wilson and the corners for playing time

Definitely better for it to be taken care of now as oppossed to him being pushed to play and having it linger into the season.

If a player doesn't let a hamstring fully heal it will affect them until they do. It's not like you can play with your hamstring 70% and just let it heal over time while you play. It won't work, or it will go VERY slowly.

The need for an athletic safety with coverage skills like a cornerback is becoming greater since the rise in prominence of the tight end and slot receiver.

hamstring is 1 of the most important things to have healthy. if its a little hurt..it'll bug u for awhile since football players run repeatedly, lift repeatedly and they are on their legs most of the time(unlike Beisel)

Yeah, hammies are the injury where the more agressive the treatment, the less you do

I think it has to do with quad/hamstring muscle strength imbalance. Quads give power and speed. Hamstrings oppose them. THe stronger the hamstring, the more resistance to the quad doing its job. So, ideally the quads should be a lot stronger for max burst and speed.

However, it the quad is too strong and the hamstring too weak, the quad can overpowere the hammy and cause it to tear.

Same thing as shin splints with calf and shin muscles.

Same treatment, too. Rest.

Did anyone watch the 60 Minutes with Joe Namath where he got in a water skiing accident that tore his ham string and he should have had surgery but didn't so he has this big ball in the back of his leg when he flexes that is the bunched up hamstring.

WTF? What's up with this hamstring bull****? What are these players doing? I just don't get it when players walk onto the field and before you know it, they hurt their hamstring. Their hamstring hurts just thinking about it.
