Yessir, the Pats were on the short end of the stick on that rule in Week 2 of the 2001 season versus the Jets. Mr. Atkinson doesn't know what he's talking about.

When I was a kid my father took me to a Pats home game vs. the Jets in October 1971 that was played in a torrential downpour. The rain was so heavy at times that we couldn't see the action on the field. It was so bad that we decided to leave after the first quarter.

Here's the rule:

NFL Rule 3, Section 21, Article 2, Note 2: When a Team A player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble."

Like most of you, I've seen the tape a hundred times. It sure looks like Brady is starting a Passing motion and then begins to bring his arm down and he loses possession of the the ball before he's secured it against his body. QED.

And yes, I do recall it being used last season. I'm trying to find when and where.
