I think the WR depth chart will end up being:

Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Washington, Gaffney and Troy Brown will make the roster as a 6th receiver/dime-db.

Reche will either be traded or cut.

Let me add that Chad Jackson will be put on PUP or season long IR situation.

Guys, guys, guys:

Why in the world would you get rid of Reche Caldwell? He had 62 catches last year, 750+ yards. Has a year of experience in the system. Hard worker. Physical player. And, an affordable contract.

He is your obvious fourth wide receiver unless somebody beats him like a drum in training camp. He'll rotate with Moss and Stallworth plus give you a solid NFL player when one of them gets dinged. And, I would expect him to get significant playing time because I think they plan to play games with Moss, lining him up in the slot from time to time, forcing defenses to deal with Welker in one package, Moss in the next.

If you trade Caldwell, you start camp without a single WR on the roster who has experience in the Pats offensive system. You are starting from ground zero without a guy who can share a little insight into the route adjustments and what Brady expects.

The top four will be:

Moss
Stallworth
Caldwell
Kelker (slot)

With the others (Gaffney, Washington, maybe Brown, maybe Jackson) competing for the fifth and/or sixth slots. If Brown comes back, it's to fill the backup slot/emergency DB position and you lean towards Washington as the other guy. If Brown doesn't come back, then Gaffney has a shot as he is experienced at the slot.

I don't know why we keep talking about Jackson. He's missing his second full-offseason. When exactly did he show he's ready to be an NFL receiver? Until such time, the only thing he brings to the party is speed and they have speed in Stallworth and Moss. PUP/IR. See ya next year. The Pats didn't sign Moss, Stallworth, Washington, and Welker because they are expecting great things from Chad Jackson in 2007.

Nick Kaczur - there were a few trade rumor rumblings before the draft and we drafted a couple of OT. Kaczur would need to be traded for more and I don't think we'd trade him but if they like O'Callaghan and Britt and think the draftees can be used for depth, this isn't impossible. Keep an eye on Cleveland still, the perception was Thomas would play LT and Shaeffer would move to RT - now I'm reading Schaeffer may be traded as he's never played RT so they could have a need.

Caldwell - clearly is usable for someone. Kind of extraneous for us and signed cheap for one more year.

Gaffney - see Caldwell.

Chad Jackson - More likely to be put on ice for a year, either PUPed, IRed or at the bottom of the 53 man depth chart. If his knee is healing, though, they may move on.

That's about it, I guess. Kaczur and Jackson would need to bring more than dump value, the others would be cheap if we traded them. Pre draft there were rumblings of Kaczur and Hill to Cleveland for Andra Davis. We still have a need at ILB, they still have a need a DE and will at RT if Schaeffer doesn't move there.
Cousin,
Kaczur for Davis makes much sense! I agree. I think Thomas will be behind Shaefer for a few games anyway. I'd throw in Hill for one of their QB (Anderson) who has more game experience than Cassel. They have five QB's listed.

Good research job on that. Was hoping to steal Hartwell before the Bengals get him.

I think it's way too early to give up on CJ. His upside, and what he can provide for us over the next few years when healthy, far outweighs whatever we'd get in return right now. And I also disagree that Caldwell is extraneous. Gaffney is probably the one to go...unfortunate since he was good in the postseason.

Don't forget that Jackson is around for multiple years on a reasonable contract. Stallworth and Kelly are around for one year, then the team makes a decision whether to keep either at a significant salary increase.

Moss is in the same boat; although, I don't have the particulars about whether there is a cash extension decision after one or two years.

My guess is that Jackson will be on the roster next season to prove whether he deserves to stay. I realize we've heard nothing concrete about the time projection on his injury recovery.

You don't trade up into the beginning of the second round to pick a player and then get rid of him after one year. That would be a terrible move.
