Default It All Makes Sense Now

Yesterday when we traded away our 1st and 3rd round picks for 2008 picks, I figured it was just a really weak draft, and Piolichick wanted better value for next year. However, I was puzzled at why we lost 'points' in those deals.

NOW, IT ALL MAKES SENSE. In order to get Randy Moss, we had to really watch our cap space, and there was no way we could have fit Moss if we signed multi-year rookie deals for a 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder.

The lesson as always: In Piolichick We Trust.

You may well be right or the #1 pick. But the 3rd would have a tiny if any impact on the cap vs the rule of 51. The contract for the #91 guy would be just at or maybe even below the cutoff to even count vs the cap until final cutdown, at which time the difference between that cap hit, and an UDFA would be negible.

This move is so money I am speechless. Our team is stacked this year, plus we have an extra 1st and 3rd for next year. What I'm curious is how long Piolichick knew about this deal and kept it quiet - during the first round? before the draft?

Ya have to figure that yesterday's odd swap of the 3rd rounders with the Raiders was part of the deal. Somebody suggested that next year's third from Oakland could be a way of buiding a conditional clause into the deal to ensure that Moss actually does rework his contract or make the roster or whatever.

Also, the first round trade with San Fran netted a 4th rounder three picks higher than Green Bay -- the other reported suitor for Moss.

The Pats had been in discussions with the Raiders before the draft. You can count on that. So it's not a surprise they anticipated needing to keep cap room free to make a possible Moss trade work.

Actually, someone was reporting (sorry I don't remember who!) that the Pats had been talking with the Raiders for a while now; the talks kept breaking down and restarting.

Anyone think we traded out when Dallas traded up for A.Spencer?
I know we needed an ILB more. But, edge pass rushers are hard to find and we almost had him at 28.

I was thinking the same thing on Spencer.

1. you're wrong. The total first year cap hit of pick #28, and average picks in rounds 2,3 and 4 is less than the $3M we are giving Moss. This had nothing to do with cap space.

2. How is trading pick #91 for Oakland's third round pick next year a bad deal?
Its certainly likely that Oakland will have better than #91 next year. Its also likely that the talent available in the third round next year will be better than what was out there this year, when BB/SP clearly didn't like what they saw on the board. The 7th round pick is just gravy.
