Who would you pick if we traded Asante to an upper tier team in the first round of the draft?

Probably would not be the Raiders or Lions or Browns since I think they are not looking at CB so it would have to be #4 or lower

Would it be LaRon Landry,Leon Hall (which seems like the best choice since he probably would take over the hole at CB) or someone else?

I don't see them getting a top 10 pick for Asante. In fact today's little Reiss reminder that they are looking to opt out of round 1 possibly entirely could be a thinly veiled message to teams who are interested in Asante that a round 1 pick this year isn't even necessarily what it would take to land him.

Don't see it happening at all. No sure fire winners up there, but value in 2-3. Asante is a wild card, but I will be surprised if we don't pick in 2.

First of all, here's a very good article from our own home page, theorizing that we LIKE not being at the top, and for very good value reasons:

http://www.boston.com/sports/footbal...+Patriots+news

For another thing, I have been reading stuff saying that this year's crop thins out very quickly at the top end, even compared w/other years.

I don't see us picking before 24.

Great article! It all seems so simple, especially in this year's draft with so much equal talent in the first 75-100 picks.

Well, in the spirit of STAYING ON TRACK WITH WHAT THE THREAD IS ABOUT (for the love of Christ), I'd say that IF the Pats were to get the #6 (which we all stipulate they will not), but IF they do...

I'd take LaRon Landry and not look back. If he's not there, Willis. No question.

Asante will probably play for the franchise number, so the Pats' backs are not against the wall. Because they do not have to trade him, Samuel's trade value is actually higher than that of other veterans who have successfully burned bridges and shot their way out of town. Therefore I believe Samuel can fetch a 1st rdr. How high is based on need. The teams that IMO are most likely to target a CB are Houston, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Tennessee and the Giants. I doubt Buffalo will deal with the Pats. I think the most likely suitors would be Tennessee and the Giants. Mike Brown is not about to pay through the nose, Houston will want draft picks thrown in before coughing up #10, and also will go back and watch some of Samuel's horrible performances vs. the Colts prior to the last AFCCG. Therefore the new Giant GM, and the new Tennessee GM are the likeliest suckers. My bet would be the Giants, who were roundly criticized in the NY press for not spending in free agency, being caught with their pants down, missing the bus, etc. So I think the Pats could get the #20 pick for Samuel. My guess is they would stand "pat" at #20 and #24, and trade back into the 2nd rd with #28 to accumulate more and future picks. The one player I think they will trade up for if he slides a bit is Revis.

Pardon my shameless hijacking!

I must stipulate that I may do the same thing should I stumble on a "If Tom Brady learns to fly..." thread.

In all seriousness, you never say never when it comes to the Pats and the draft. That's not to say you don't say "reallllllly unlikely." Given the little I have read thus far, I would say take the pick(s) for Samuel next year rather than this year. Asante aside, the deal I would be looking for is 28 for a 1st rounder in 2008 and a 2nd this year. But IF the Pats MUST be the team trying to trade up, in a year when everybody and his brother wants to trade down...

But IF I am picking at 6, assuming Calvin Johnson is gone (which seems very likely,) yes, Landry would be a great 6, although the guys that don't look great to us (because we think WAY more in terms of need than BB/SP) shouldn't be ignored - thinking specifically about the linemen. But, being a fanboy and all, if forced to take the 6, I may try to package it and move up to grab Calvin, if JaMarcus and Brady push him to 3, and my 24 can get me to 3.

Now, back to that article, everything I've read, and what I really feel the Pats SHOULD do... and yes, do a BOOYAH! and kick me to the curb Sat. if I am wrong... what they SHOULD do is build up the 2nd - 4th rounds, and/or the high rounds of next year, take their 24, make their best selection, and move on.

I just don't see the value in getting to #6, but getting the skins 1st rounder in 2008 and their second rounder this year? Yeah, that'd be okay. From what I can tell, it's always a fire sale on next year's picks with those guys, and with most of the league. I think that deal would actually be swingable. If you're talking about "this year", oh we have a very scientific chart, etc. etc. etc. But if you're talking about "next year," it's suddenly a big moveable feast.
