Default Jets Sign DE Michael Haynes

Quote:
The New York Jets announced Thursday they have signed defensive end Michael Haynes. The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Haynes (6-4, 283) spent three years with the Chicago Bears after being selected 14th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft out of Penn State. In 43 career games (four starts), Haynes registered 89 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. He recorded his only career NFL interception at Tennessee in 2004 and took it back 45 yards for a touchdown.

an interesting historical tidbit. In 2003 the Bears held the 13th pick in the draft, while the Pats stood at 14. After watching the Jets and Saints use their 2 first rounders to move up and select Drob and Sulivan, then watch as Minn took Kevin Williams and the Rams took Jimmie Kennedy; I was trying to figure out what DTs were left for the Pats to pick.

The Bears were about to pick at 13, when Tags announced that the Bears and Pats had switched picks and the Pats selected Ty Warren, who most draft experts predicted would be a late first round or early second round selection. With the pick that the Bears got from us, they selected Michael Haynes.....plus a 5th or 6th rounder IIRC. I bet they wish they had THAT one to do over.

Its interesting to note that 2003 was the year of the DT with 6 going in the first round. Since the next few weeks are going to be spent in speculating greatness from our picks, it should be noted that out of those 6 picks ONLY TWO can be concidered successful (Warren & Williams, and only 3 of those 6 are even regular starters (Warren, Williams & Drob.)

That lack of success should be a sobering notice to all of us speculators, especially since DL, next to OL, is perhaps the safest position to project a player successfully

On the Jet pick up. Its very similar to our Johnathan Sullivan pick up. A first round talent, who has been a bust, but might be able to turn it around in a new system. On the plus side, Haynes was shuffled from DE to DT whil in Chicago, where he was too small to be a DT, and too slow to be a DE in their 4-3. Its possible being a DE in a 3-4 2 gap system, might be just the perfect fit for him. At least that is what Jet fans are hoping.

or how about the fact that the pats sat there and picked the 5th or 6th one of the draft and still got the best one for their system.(maybe williams is better) I remember that draft I was hoping we would get Ty Warren with our late pick but I was starting to think he wouldn't last because of how quick the lineman were being drafted, then we traded up and got him. I was excited we actually drafted someone I was interested in but I was confused why we took him so high, guess we didnt want to risk missing out on him. Funny the way things work out, imagine if we didnt make the move and waited and hoped he fell.

We gave up a 6th rounder to move up 1 spot. What I don't understand is why Haynes was a FA after only 3 seasons. Isn't Ty Warren's contract for 5 years?

No, he signed a 6 year deal. Vince and Ben signed 6 year deals too. After those two, we haven't signed any other first round pick to more than 5 year deals.

From Chicago Sun-Times:

"Former first-round draft pick Michael Haynes will join another ex-Bear after signing a one-year contract with the New York Jets. Haynes was cut by the Bears at the end of training camp and was claimed by the New Orleans Saints, but a bad back derailed his season and he wound up filing a grievance against the Bears.

Haynes, who was drafted 14th overall in 2003, never fit into Lovie Smith's scheme. At 285 pounds, he couldn't play at a lighter weight. He'll get a chance to be a run stuffer in the Jets' 3-4 scheme playing in a rotation with Brian Hamilton behind starters Shaun Ellis and Kimo von Oelhoffen. In 43 games, he made four starts and had 89 tackles and 5½ sacks.

''I'll be playing somewhere where they prefer smarter guys with some of the blitzes they do,'' Haynes said. ''To be honest, I'm happy to be going someplace where they won't frown on me for being intelligent.''

One of the raps on Haynes was that he thought too much and did not play instinctively. Either way, it was a bad fit for him and general manager Jerry Angelo with the Bears."
