IMO, Samuels and the Pats had already decided to make it work. The franchise tag was simply to buy time until the "comparables" came in under the new CBA.
I could be wrong, but that's the way I see it.
Wow - stunningly insightful. It would be so elegantly Belichick-esque, if it's true.

Okay everyone. I must admit, I am extremely devastated. When I made a very very similar comment on an earlier thread, no one ever told me that I was "Stunningly insightful" or that I had an "Ingenius theory" and no one ever told me that I had a "perceptive theory".
In a previous thread, I stated the following: The Defense Before the Draft
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I say wait on resigning asante. Put a deal in place and let his people know that after the draft, well gladly give it to him. We could use that to our advantage. A smoke screen tactic so to speak. I might be kinda overdoing it here, but to other teams, they'll have no idea what the pats are even slightly goin for. Any edge we can get, im for it."
So with all of the evidence out on the table now, I must ask this. Is there any law for being a reply stealer on this board. Hwc should be banned for 2 months without pay, in response to the uncanny similarities of our posts.
Okay. Im sorry. Its late, and I just thought it was absolutely awesome that someone agreed with me, without really agreeing with me. It was all a joke, and I am bored. LOL. Good post HWC. G'night ya'll.

can people please stop comparing Asante to Deion? Deion was looking at giving up 1M by sitting. Asante would be giving up 7.8M. Also, all reports have been that NE was willing to pay Deion his market rate of 6M per season and the problem was that Deion wanted to tear up his remaining 1 year at 1M rather than working it into his new deal.

HolyRedeemer, you were very insightful too. Ingenious, even. We just didn't notice it, who knows why. But this theory, yours and HWC's, make all kinds of sense.

This is the old adage, once bitten twice shy, I feel pretty much the same not sure about the timing of the announcement, but there are indicators that it is probably all worked out or very close to being all worked out so much so that the glass is way more than 1/2 full.

While the sides may be close, there is absolutely NO WAY that a deal is worked out and being sat on! How do I know this? Because Asante would have to be a COMPLETE moron, and his agent should never work in the industry again if it is true. Let's say in the next month, before the deal is signed and announced, Asante loses a leg in a freak gasoline fight...he won't see any of the money, but if he signed now, he would get his guarenteed money. There is no way that he would be willing to gamble with his economic future so that our FO could play its mind games with other teams. It takes both sides to make something like this possible, and in this case, there is absolutely no incentive for one of the sides to play along.

Regarding working out in Florida: wasn't Samuel the one that trains with Jevon Kearse (and maybe some other big guys?). I seem to be recall some funny quotes about Samuel struggling to hold back Kearse in a running drill they do due to their large difference in size. Or am I thinking of the wrong guy?
