Default Does Clement's Deal Seal Asante's Fate

The bar is set for top end CBs in the league based on Clements in SF. I know there is funny money in the deal but 8 yrs 80M with what, 18M gauranteed.?

Now with big names/contracts of Thomas, Seymour, Wilfork/Warren (hopefully being locked up ASAP for 4+ yrs), can you see another multimillion dollar contract on the BB/SP defense. The bench becomes that much thinner when you have 4 players making 5,6,7,8 million a year on defense. Do you think that Asante's agent has a handshake deal with the Pats about not being franchised again? Is this the last year for Samuel with the Patriots?

i think it's business and no handshakes. i think he plays for one year under the franchise and pats draft his replacement this yr.

Agree with this assessment. It is also one of the reasons I don't think the Pats trade down in this years draft. They know they need to draft a replacement for Asante and there is talent in the secondary in the bottom third of the draft. Would not be surprising to see S/CB instead of LB just for the idea of this being Asante's last Patriot year.

Why can't they just franchise him again? (Other than the fact Asante will hate the organization for it because it defers his life retirement contract payday)

It depends on if we draft CB in round one.

i doubt samuel expects an $80 mil deal b/c a player did. Champ is highest paid but i dont think its $80 mil but has more per year. If Samuel gets another solid year he definatley gets top 3 money

FINAL YEAR OF CLEMENTS DEAL IS PHONY

Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange explains that the eight-year, $80 million deal given by the 49ers to cornerback Nate Clements contains a phony final year, which automatically will be voided when a $10 million option bonus is paid to the player in 2008.

So either the option bonus won't be paid, and it'll be just a one-year deal -- or the option bonuswill be paid, and the contract will be worth $64.02 million over seven years.

This is far different from a puffed up back end; it's a complete fabrication of the final year.

They could have picked any number for that final year. Instead of eight years, $80 million, the contract could have been eight years, $100 million. Or eight years, $800 million. Or eight years, infinity.

So why did they plop $15.98 million into the eighth year that will disappear a year from now? It was, in our view, a favor to the agent, who'll now be able to trumpet to recruits the fact that he negotiated an "eight-year, $80 million" contract.

He didn't. It's seven years, $64.02 million. Still impressive, but not as catchy.

Nate Clements makes less than $1 million a year less than Tom Brady.

This is Asante's last year with the Patriots. I think that's pretty clear. I expect him to perform well, and then someone will offer him $8 million per next season. The Patriots are not going to offer him that much with Warren and Wilfork coming up.

Speaking of Warren, when are they going to do his deal? August?

Poor Asante, doomed to be a multi-millionaire. Oh, cruel fate.
