Asante's agent's public stance is that they want a long-term extension negotiated THIS off-season or Asante will pout. (I'm paraphrasing broadly, of course, but that's what it amounts to.) However, until they lose faith in that happening they're cool with the tag.

That said, their idea of what an acceptable extension is and the Pats' idea might be pretty far apart.

I thought he had an exclusive tag. Meaning he averages the top 5 Corners this season as opposed to last.. You sure they gave him the non-exclusive?

The free agents include six players who this year were designated by their clubs as non-exclusive "franchise" players. The NFL includes Samuel as part of the six.

not that it is worth anything but my I am impressed by how quiet Asante has been. While whining doesn't really get you anywhere lots of guys do it anyway. Asante is either mature enough to accept that the system screws him (though making 7.8M is hardly being screwed in the real world it is compared to where he'd be if not tagged) or smart enough to stay quiet about it.

AND is still young enough to have MORE HUGE pay days in the future, IF he plays up to that level
Or about 500,000 after taxes?

Right after the tag news didn't he state he was OK with it? I can't remember if it was on NESN or the All Access show or in an article, but I recall that tidbit. So either he really is ok or at least he's cool enough not to complain about it publicly. Hopefully he'll just get out there and play like he did last year.

I think the new CBA made the tag $ "guaranteed" which has softened it's blow to the risk the player takes.

looks like pioli and belichick had a plan for this offseason that entailed franchising samuel so they could max an atypical FA run. i used to think they would trade him, but now i'm thinking that they're waiting to see where they stand on the cap after FA and the Draft. IMO, they'll either pay him this year or next year.

as for how he feels about this, it's a business and he knows it and, by the way, he is getting almost eight million dollars. his fate is in his hands. if he has another great year, his value will be even greater. he has the risk that he diminishes his value with a bad year next year (not even talking about injury). and, if he's a competitor, he'll take that as a challenge and try to stick it to the pats by having another great year and thus making it even more expensive for the patriots to keep him next year.

Could someone explain to me how a "tagged" year is different from the last year of a contract in regards to a career ending injury for a player? This has often puzzled me. Say if Player A is on the last year of his 4yr contract, how is he any less vulnerable than Player B, who's got a one year tag, to a career ending injury. Just wondering. Also, aren't all NFL players insured?

Here to learn(shamlessly stolen from Mike )
