Default Pft: Steelers Tied To New Steroids Situation

Published reports regarding Orlando pharmacies from which steroids and human growth hormone were seized include an ominous reference to the potential activities of one the physicians who works for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This physician in question reportedly used a personal credit card to purchase $150,000 worth of testosterone and HGH in 2006.

The potential problem with this development is that, if the doctor was getting the stuff for Steelers players, the situation implies a certain level of institutional involvement that has not been present in past steroids scandals. Even if the doctor was acting on his own, the fact remains that an employee of the franchise was buying testosterone and HGH for players (if, again, the stuff was bought for Steelers players).

And if that's true, it's huge news. It's even bigger news if the doctor claims that members of the team's administration knew, or should have known, what he was doing.

The NFL still doesn't test for HGH. So anyone who thinks that at least some NFL players aren't using HGH needs to wake up and smell the nandrolone.

Meanwhile, at a time when off-field behavior finally is getting some meaningful attention in the media and among fans, what will it take for NFL players to be saddled with the same stigma that attaches to baseball players who use performance-enhancing substances? The reaction to the Shawne Merriman situation might have nudged the league closer in this regard to its realization that the problem needs to be addressed; if this current mess results in evidence suggesting that one of the most storied franchises in all of sport was procuring HGH or testosterone for its players, the damage could be irreparable.
Wow!!
As a fan of FOOTBALL in general, I hope that this is not true.

"I advised the League office yesterday of our knowledge of the situation. I have also reviewed the matter with our Head Trainer, John Norwig, as well as the head of our medical staff, Dr. Tony Yates," Rooney said in the statement. "There is no evidence that Dr. Rydze prescribed or provided any hormone treatments to any of our players. Dr. Rydze has assured me that this has never happened and will never happen."

No, he just keeps $150k of steroids around the house, in case he needs it.

As I understand it the good Doctor is quoted as saying that he would only ever use the HGH for elderly patients - which is a very legitimate reason.

Of course, it doesn't explain why these drugs were bought on a personal credit card - im presuming that it is abnormal behavior for the FBI to have a red flag appear.

We'll see how this one pans out.

Yes.

In any event, this would be an appropriate time for the good doctor to begin sweating bullets and *****ting bricks.

There's always an excuse.

The most commonly envoked one is "I didn't know I was taking steroids."

Weren't the Steelers of the 1970s at the forefront of early steroid use in the NFL? The more things change...

I didn't know doctors were in the business of selling drugs, I thought they gave out prescriptions and left the drug sales to the pharmacies.

I would imagine that is why the FBI/DEA found it suspicious.

I heard this story on the radio on the way in to work and definitely heard mention of the Squeelers.

Then went looking on ESPN; before I found this thread and.....

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2782741

lo and behold; absolutely NO MENTION of the mighty yellow and black.

I was starting to think I had mis-heard it.

Well of course he was just looking for that free round trip airline ticket, don't you know?

After all the Squeelers physician doesn't pull down enough to afford a $800 plane ticket. Or was he going to redeem the miles for something else?....hmmmm
