Default Superbowl 36 question regarding Willie's holding penalty on Faulk

Yes, I'm talking about the play where Warner fumbled on the goal line and Tebucky returned it for what would have been the clinching touchdown, but Willie got flagged for tackling Faulk.

My question is this: was that on a play-action pass? I can't remember clearly, but I think it may have been.

The reason I ask is that, on a play-action pass, defenders are allowed to tackle any runner who is reasonably expected to have the ball.

It's been bugging me.

I don't remember, but I think it was. Warner ended up rolling to his right while Faulk ran out to the left, so it was probably some kind of bootleg. I doubt they would run a sprint-out with Warner and no play fake.
I am not sure though because of that rule you just cited. Now that I think closer, I think it was a regular play where Warner was looking right and got forced out of the pocket by Phifer maybe? I checked youtube and couldn't find anything.

Faulk was way out in the left flat on a goal line play. No way could you use that excuse. WMG held him and was called for it. It wasn't necessarily a bad hold. Warner would have had Faulk for a TD if Faulk got by Willie. It was Faulk being held that made Warner move to the right looking for a receiver.

I was asking.

Cheese and rice, some people here are high-strung. Try decaf, brother. Oooh! Or herbal tea!

However, thank you for clarifying the play itself. I couldn't find any video.

yes warner was passing the ball but when Willie knocked down Marshel Faulk Warner ran for the score but lost the ball but if wille was pushing Faulk it would have been Game over.

It was not a play fake. Faulk was lined up offset about 4 yards to Warner's left. Warner dropped straight back, and Faulk ran a pass pattern to the left directly out of the formation, and Willie wrapped his arms around him. Warner and Faulk didn't come within 5 yards of each other.

If it had been a play fake, though, it shouldn't have been a penalty.

From my recolection Willie wrapped his arms around faulk but imediately jumped back with his arms out (as to say " I didn't hold him") and faulk almost fell down trying to break free, that is why the flag was thrown...there was no playaction pass, Warner was deliberatly trying to run a bootleg to run it in or dump it over the D for the TD...It was an Iffy call, but there was a lot of hard hits and grabing in that game, who to say how the outcome would have been...
