Play our standard 3-4, contain him as we can, and allow the DBs to do their job of stopping the 15 yard run from becoming a 62 yard run. By doing this not only do we hopefully contain (not stop) Tomlinson, we don't run the risk of a deep ball against an undermanned secondary.
As weird as it sounds, the way I would try to stop Tomlinson also plays to have a full complement of DBs. I think teams have a double edged sword against them if they bring a Safety up to stop the run by enhancing the chance of both a long run and long pass by removing a normally placed Safety.

It's a good point. Teams that bring the SS up all the time invite the deep pass, play action and so on. I guess the key will be how well our Front three plays. If they can hold their gaps and hopefully beat their matchups, then Tomlinson won't do all that much damage. It's not rocket science to say that D is about discipline. If the players stay focused on defending their gaps and NOT going for the big loss, then LT can hopefully be contained. I haven't seen the Chargers play this year so don't know if they are big on traps. The big concern I have is Gates and who has the athleticism and ability to stay with him.
