Default If you were Pats management, and Mankins were a free agent, what would you do?

Given the current personnel at guard, and wiping the slate clean of contracts and bad vibes, and Mankins out there on the market for all comers, what's your approach?

that depends on a lot of things but He's a guard that is on the market cause he is holding out to get has much money has he can so i wouldn't be breaking the bank for him even then

Actually, this is more about general personnel and cap management philosophy than Mankins. He's just the case study.

I'd start a thread on patsfans.com and see what the fans thought.

Just so you know your Poll is flawed what people are forgetting is that Mankins technalically is a Free Agent not attached to any team at all he is not hte Patriots roperty cause he didn't sign the tender offer.

I know there is a catch to the rule about other teams signing him at this point (even ifi don't know the rules personally) i think the only way another team can get him is a Sign and Trade. which is basiclly what would have happened anyway.

and this is a Mankins thread and not a "personnel and cap management" thread cause you could have asked about the OLB postion just as easily if not easy so jsut admit you made a Mankins thread instead for trying to distract we are smarter then that.

Do you mean what WOULD I have done?

You're not talking about now right?

Assuming that the salary cap is going to be restricted and limited by the new CBA, I would have offered a mid-range contract back in the spring. I would not have offered a top contract like the Patriots offered.

Again, I don't know what Kraft or the Patriots know, but I'm assuming there will possibly be an incremental restriction of the cap based on both the economy and the sharing of dollars between the haves and have-nots. If so, the position of guard is not one I would spend a great deal of money on.

You have to look into the future. The Patriots need to pay pass rushers, DEs, CBs, and I want Randy Moss to come back. With a restricted cap, the dollars are limited.

For this reason, I thought the Patriots were too generous in what they offered both Vince Wilfork and Logan Mankins. I don't think either player has the value that they think they have in the open market. That being said, I said the same thing about Asante Samuel and Deion Branch, and so I should know better because someone is ALWAYS willing to pay up. The thing is, Deion Branch and Asante are not worth the cash they are making/they made. So, even though I assumed wrong about the players' market value, I think I was proven right about their actual value to their teams.

Mankins is one of the best 10 or so (maybe 15) guards in football, but since I value the position less than some, I make a mid-range offer.

So, the consensus is that Mankins played in front of Maroney too long, and now his ego is made of glass?

None of the above.
I think they need to wait him out.
Sitting out a season is not an acceptable solution to Mankins.
It is simply a threat, and the only one he has. You will note he did not say I will sit out and be a UFA next year, he said trade me.
Pats should continue to wait him out. "We made an offer, if you want to make a counter, we will listen. A trade is not an option"
Mankins will come back to the table, sooner rather than later.
The fact that his agent is in the media whining now is clear indication of a softening.
If its all about principle and I will never play there again you dont have an agent saying 'people usually work these things out'.
I can't say the strategy will work. I'm pretty sure the Jet approach of pleading wont either.
I see no point in trading him.

I would cut James Sanders and then resign Mankins. That way he'll get the money he wants and the Patriots won't take too big of a cap hit. I know we constantly hear about all of Sanders' "intangibles", but that's probably because his tangibles (i.e. his coverage and help against the run) are terrible. Simply put, giving Mankins a top 3 guard contract might not be value, but it's way better value than the contract Sanders has.

We're all glad they're committed to a more physical offense that can wear defenses down, but that's gonna be a really hard thing to accomplish if they need to mix and match at offensive line every week.
