Default Patriots have 'Strong Interest' in LB Schobel but he wants to be paid

Giardi posted this on his twitter:

Quote:
In case you missed it: source says #Patriots have "strong" interest in Aaron Schobel. But this is no Seau situation. He wants big $.
Michael Giardi (MikeGiardi) on Twitter

The question is what is big money? I think the Pats if they think he is good fit should pay for him, but only to a point. He is still a player in his early 30s who has already considered retirement. If he is looking for ridiculous money, I think they should pass. If he is looking for good money, but nothing way out of whack then they should jump into the mix.

Default Patriots Have 'Strong Interest' in LB Schobel

When asked about recently released Bills linebacker Aaron Schobel, Patriots Director of Player Personnel said on Thursday that the team would do their "due dillegence" with him as they would any released player. Apparently they've seen enough.

It's a tantalizing prospect and one that will certainly put our four man rush over the top, and with Cunningham in Elephant, has the potential to make our 4-3 very difficult to contain.

I am sure that if we successfully obtain him, we would have to let Mankins go. If we break the bank for Schobel, I don't see how this will go over well with Mankins.

I'm not so sure I'd put a ton of stock in anything Mike Giardi claims he has sourced...

Let's see, the difference between an 8 million a year guard and the 5 guys on the roster and experienced guards available with every cutdown from other teams or...

The difference between Schobel and increased playing time for Woods and Ninchovich.

Sign the beast.

He's a nice guy, I met him years ago when he was a young segment producer getting his feet wet as an on air guy covering the Sox. He's never been a breaking story insider or anything...

Mike Reiss linked to a blog by John McClain ( no, not the one from Die Hard) but a writer for a Houston newspaper who covers the Texans who opined that after paying Andre Johnson with a new contract that is worth $23.5 million to max of $38 million, they may be over budget and only could pay $4 million, not the $8 million he would have earned in Buffalo.

Should the Texans sign Schobel? | NFL | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

>>
Schobel won't get $8 million from the Texans. He might not get $4 million. But I'm sure they'll be fair and willing to give him a lot of incentives.<<<<
( I had to limit it to three sentences. If the guy wrote longer sentences, I could post more!!!)

It's not mutually exclusive, getting paid and playing for a winner but sometimes you have to compromise. If he was just in it for the money, he would have played for $8 million in Buffalo this year. If he wants to play for a winner, he may have to compromise on the money. How much? That's an answer only he (or his agent) knows. If $4 million would solve the pass rush problems, sign him.

If we could somehow get this and Mankins done that would be sweet.

I'd offer Schobel big money on a short (2 years or so) deal.

Mankins, I'd offer a nice contract but I'd make him play out his current deal this year; however I'd add SB incentives to his deal this year to give him good upside IF WE WIN BIG.

Is it anything more than speculation that he would insist on Houston? After all, we all know that Buffalo has degenerated into one of those hopeless franchises and Schobel is certainly aware that the Patriots run a first class operation, great coach and have been in contention every single year of this decade.

Who is to say he wouldn't consider New England favorably without undue persuasion. Of course pass rushers of his caliber want to be compensated, is that a problem?

Do we want to make an all or nothing gamble on Cunningham, like we did on AD Thomas, or let him make the position transition while picking up some moves from one of the best pass rushers in football?

Not like we expected one of the top rushers in football to just drop into our laps when we once again were relying on wishful thinking to supply half the production from the position.
