Lightbulb Belichick: Find Your Own Identity

Ian's Daily Blog - Tom Curran had an interesting report this afternoon on Comcast Sports New England. Curran reports that according to former Patriots receiver Troy Brown, Bill Belichick has been busy this offseason taking down reminders of who the Patriots recently were.

Default NESN: Pats wiping away remnants of glory days

Pats wiping away remnants of glory days

...it's something they need to do because they've been living in the shadow of the past Patriots. (The media) talks about it. "What difference did Tedy make? What difference did Rodney make?' Let's talk about what kind of difference Brandon Meriweather is going to make this year. That's the signal (Belichick) is trying to send to these guys."
Very interesting/awesome.

VERY interesting and I think appropriate move by Belichick. (Apologies to the past greats like Brown, etc. from this fan.) What I really admire about BB is that as a manager he's constantly re-inventing his approach and adapting to the changing environment. I have an MBA worked for many CEOs, none impressive, and one of the top ten business guys I'd kill to listen to speak is Belichick.

Kudos to Curran for reporting this.

The interesting thing about this is that "Mangenius" did something similar when he got to Cleveland, moving/painting over (depending on the story) a mural of the Browns greats (Jim Brown, etc...), their fan's reaction was markedly different than the first couple of posts in this thread.

Me? I have no problem with it, but then again I don't think players should have to be motivated. Things like this SHOULD not be necessary.

Definitely the right move, imo. Who's left from those teams, anyways? Brady, Faulk and Light are the elder statesmen on offense, and Wilfork and Warren on D... that's hardly anyone. Forget the 2001 championship team; there's hardly anyone left from 2004, even. From that perspective, I'd say that this is, if anything, a little overdue. These are mostly new guys with little to no connection to the dynasty.

"Should be necessary" has nothing to do with it. "Is it effective?" is the appropriate question. People respond to positive messages. That's a fact. It's not a weakness of their character or lack of motivation. Guys want to win; they push themselves to the limit to win; but they need to learn how to win; and they need to develop the right mindset to win. He'll do the former at practices throughout the year, and he is starting on the latter with the redecoration of Gillette. He is providing a clear message that nobody has accomplished anything yet and letting the new guys know that he believes in them without resorting to some kind of Stuart Smalley BS, "cuz gosh darn it, Brandon - people like you."

Like folks have said, that's leadership.

Interesting. I just wonder about the downside to this- without that tradition around to remind them, would they feel obliged to live up to 'the patriot way'? Then again I suppose they could always tour Patriot Place HOF.

Frankly, I think too many of our players who were not here when we won have sounded like they thought they were part of the dynasty.

i lot of the guys on the roster were still in high school the last time the pats won a SB so BB dose not want the kids to have to live up to the dynasty that is long gone. dose days are over does players moved on and he is just trying to build a winning team again.

This is a new Patriot team, there aren't many guys still around from the Super Bowl years. This is a new group of guys and they need to make a name of themselves, not relive what some of the former Pats players/teams did. A good move by BB I think
