If he went in as the 2nd qb he has to play until the end of the third quarter as the 2nd qb and no other position, but that does not apply to him since league rules require two bona fide quarterbacks active on the 45 man roster each game- Hoyer was that 2nd guy and Edelman is a wide receiver first and foremost.

He was designated inactive as the third quarterback(46th man on roster) once and once only- against the Saints. Are you using that as the basis for your claim? If so that doesn't hold water because they also designated Stanback as the inactive as the third quarterback against the Jaguars.

Something I've wondered about, and have never received a specific answer about, is how easy it is to change a player's position mid-season. In other words, could they simply re-list Edelman as a QB (obviously, 11 is a valid number for WR and QB) for one week?

In any case, "bona fide QB" does not mean "only plays QB", since Cassel was allowed to come in as a holder for the Ghost in 2006.

My point is simply that it seems like they do not plan on using Edelman at QB for anything more than an occasional gimmick play (e.g., Patten's TD pass).

Shows you how weak the Patriots were from the #3 receiver on down last year, given that this guy even started at the "three" at one point, and can't make it past OTAs this year.

Tate and Crable could IR themselves again?? WTF are you smoking? You make it sound like they get injured on purpose.

What's funny is that Tate's only been on the IR ONCE and people like yourself act as is he's been with the team 5 years and ended up there every time, much like Adrian Klemm.. And that just isn't the case.

The Pats have signed 2 of their Drafted players and Burgess.. Did you stop to think that with Teel, Robinson, Hoyer and Brady, there really wasn't a place for Stanback on the roster since he wants to be a QB? The Pats cut him now to give him a chance to sign on with another team. Heck, Stanback could have asked for his release if he felt he didn't have a good shot with the Pats.

Stevie Nicks seems to think Stanback may be sitting in the middle of his room waiting to hear from teams for a long while.

Really, unless Pioli thinks his system potential to get on the field as a fourth or fifth WR in a pinch in addition to running a scout team trumps hardworking Gutierrez (whom he drafted) workmanlike grasp of a system he's unfortunately really not poised enough to run under gameday pressure, not sure where Isiah goes from here. He's not good enough to be more than a 3rd string QB with some limited positional versatility - and most teams want either a grizzled vet mentor or a solid developmental player with upside in that QB3 hole. I would think for him it's either Pioli (because Josh already has a traffic jam at the position) or the CFL for Isiah.

Gutierrez was a UDFA whom the Pats cut and who was signed by the Chiefs..

Yup, very true.

A guy who played 42 snaps against Indy last season isn't even one of the top 12 players at the WR position on our roster in June.

Says a lot about what Brady and O'Brien were working with last year.

OK make that he was selected/signed as an UDFA on Pioli's watch... Point is Gutz was a Pioli/BB guy, Stanbeck was a BB via BP after Pioli left guy (whom Dallas drafted to develop as a WR/KR and then cut after 2 seasons but whom we signed to the PS to serve as scout team QB...). We only tapped his potential versatility under duress, and it didn't amount to much.

GM's tend to gravitate towards the thing THEY know whenever they can. Which is why Gutz landed in KC once we cut him. Which is why Cassel landed in KC as a tag and trade (and the only other place he nearly landed was Denver). Pioli doesn't know Stanbeck, but he now knows he was of very limited value to NE as a QB or WR. Maybe even that limited value is worth more in KC, Gutz obviously was, but it's a longshot unless they see him as an upgrade on Gutierrez via his limited positional versatility as a WR.

I wouldn't be shocked if Charlie wanted to kick his tires if only to take a shot at making something out of a guy both Bill's swung and missed on...Charlie does have an ego, after all. But what they really needed to do in KC was sign a guy like Patten to mentor their young receivers in the system - and teach them about becoming pros pros a QB and OC can count on who are capable of competing for a championship (which was a big part of his job in New Orleans...).
