Lightbulb Mankins 'So Mad He Can't See Straight'

Ian's Daily Blog - Tom Curran of Comcast Sports New England reports that on Sunday Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the team is working to get a deal done with guard Logan Mankins, but apparently the two sides are quite far apart. According to Curran Frank Bauer, Mankins’ agent, told him the two sides aren’t even close, and that Mankins [...]

I usually discount whatever an agent has to say. I'll wait to hear from Mankins as to what the situation is.

Who cares? Sign for a reasonable contract, sign the tender, or gtfo.

Sounds like a negotiation tactic to me. I'll withhold judgment.

There is the apparent market price. There is the team price. And somewhere in the middle is the "reasonable price". Clearly Mankins wants a contract like the guy from NO got. Clearly the Pats don't want to pay that much. IMHO its up to Mankins to man up and make a decision. He can either sign long term for something slightly more than what the Pats want to pay him, or he can sign his tender, have an all pro year, and then move on in FA in 2011. What he shouldn't do is whine about how badly he's being treated, and hold out.

Just either sign long term and take a few dollars less than what you MIGHT make on the open market, or sign your tender and go to FA in 2011

Or just stay home and rope cows... do not believe a word an agent says.

Mankins is one guy on our team whose perceived value clearly outweighs his actual value. Don't get me wrong, he's a very good player. But when Stephen Neal is healthy, he plays at a higher level than Mankins, IMO.

If Mankins hadn't originally been drafted in the 1st round, I doubt we'd hear that much about him nationally - and I highly doubt he'd be a 2 time Pro Bowler. He's a solid player who has name recognition thanks to having been a 1st round guard (before 1st round guards were in the "in" thing).

They have another 10 months to get it sorted out and who knows maybe even longer if things don't get sorted out soon between the players and the owners.

He has a mean streak on the field so if he can't see straight when he is mad that wouldn't that hurt his value

He is our best lineman. That doesn't mean we have to pay him a ridiculous amount of money, but he should get significantly more than any other OL we have. When Vollmer's rookie contract expires, I expect to say the same thing. It is a cyclical thing - once we have to break the bank for SeaBass, Mankins' contract will look like a bargain. There is nothing wrong with giving him a hefty contract... maybe 6 mil/year. Spending the money far outweighs what the O-line would be without him.

I'm going out on a limb because I haven't bothered to check what Light is making right now... and, I forget, how much did we waste on Kazcur's contract?
