I've always believed that the one big problem we had was a lack of leadership in the locker room and a lack of backbone and dignity that you have with veterans who know just how hard it is to win something worthwhile.

Brady says the problem is not with its talent base but in its ability to handle coaching. Lombardi makes a good case for this as well, young players seem to take coaching as criticism rather than as an opportunity to learn and correct mistakes.

Good article, thanks!

Good article, but us old time fans aren't fooled. Lombardi died around 1970. This guy's an imposter.

Good article and as others have pointed out a better diagnosis of the team's ailments last season than most others. Putting that in context of TB not being able to execute on comebacks (multiple reasons) and Wilfork's unwillingness to take a full leadership role because of contract negotiations, it really brings to prominence the part that some veterans played in the breakdown in team dynamics (aka locker room chemistry). I can also imagine it was more than just the young players who reacted to coaching feedback as criticism - especially Adalius who should have been a defensive leader and instead chose to be a prima donna.

Great way for TB to start the season now that the draft picks are made - lets start how we intend to finish - listening to the coach. Cant wait for this season. I am more pumped than last season when we were purportedly fully stacked. This year I feel we are returning with a "tude"

Excuse me, but what did you guys watch last year?

The biggest problem last year was defense. We lost a lot of talented veterans on defense, which had more to do with it than anyone's leadership. Fans tend to put an unrealistic and mythical sense of leadership on winning teams. The real impact to W/L is in the veteran experience not some exaggerated view of attitude and leadership qualities.

EDIT: And btw, Brady never had anything to do with leading the defense anyway.

.
and that is how I read it - we had a lot of young people on defense and the young weren't listening to the coaching and so mistakes were being made. The defense got slightly better when Sanders was brought back partly because he is good at reading offenses but also probably because he also listens to coaches. This would suggest that Butler and the other young CBs, possibly Chung and MacGowan weren't responding as they should. But it wasn't just the young that weren't listening it was some of the vets too. That is why I particularly disparaged AD who had a great year in 07, broke his arm in 08 and got on the wrong side of BB in 09.

The lack of listening skills also apply to the offense with wrong routes being run, missed assignments and TB would know about these. I have coached a few middle schools teams and there is no doubt in my mind that teams that listen and execute are always better than teams with prima donnas and team mates who believe they know it all.

Is this the only reason the team didn't meet expectations? - of course not. But it is a major one that cannot and should not be ignored.

The Pats had no ability to stop better passing games. None of your OLB's scare anyone, TBC is a nice player but he's limited. Wilfork is a great player, but against the pass he really doesn't bring much to the table.

The NFL is a passing league and the only way to stop it is to pressure the qb. I'm sure you guys watched the superbowl against the Giants. The Pats were clearly the better team that season but the giants found a way to disrupt Brady and it totally changed your passing game.

I still don't see where the Pats are getting pressure on the opposing teams qb and thats the biggest problem they have.

Well come on now, we did stop someone's passing game. Does Leigh Bodden ring any bells?

Also, if the passing game is the end all and be all, how did the Jets ride their running game to the AFCCG?
