And quite a diss of Kareem Brown (4th round pick in 2007). Sure explains why they did everything they could to get out of that draft, including trading picks into future years w/o much in the way of time-value compensation.

I thought that was very interesting, and it made me wonder if he'd tried to get out of that round and failed.

As patchick put it once, the Patriots basically ran screaming from the 2007 draft. After Meriweather, they traded away four consecutive picks (for SF's 2008 1, Welker, OAK's 2008 3, and Moss, respectively). Other than Meriweather, I think the only player they really wanted out of the draft was Stewart Bradley, and they just couldn't trade up for him.

Always a possibility, but they could have outbid Baltimore for Jacksonville's third round pick (86), right before the Eagles' two third round selections (87 and 90).

Baltimore traded 101, 166 and 203. Patriots at the time had 91, 110, 127, 180, and 202.

Baltimore underspent by the values on the trade chart (131 to 160) so the deal was there to be made. Given how low the backend of the draft graded out I think they made a mistake not using 91 + 180 + 202 (166 to 160) to ensure they got the one guy they wanted at a hole they could fill.

Instead they eventually got Justin Rodgers, Mike Richardson, Oscar Lua and partial selections of Matthew Slater and Ron Brace in return for those picks.

Excellent read. I was saying elsewhere during the draft that BB was using the value grouping philosophy again. We hadn't seen it in a while. This confirms it for me. Perhaps he saves that philosophy for drafts he deems deep?

Nice read.

And a bit of an indictment of the Pats' own draft board that year as well. It's not like there was only garbage available from the 4th round on in that draft, but that's apparently what Belioli thought.

Really? It looks pretty sparse to me. There are a few starters mixed in there but otherwise not a lot of household names.

Not to mention the 2007 team was stacked, maybe the deepest roster since free agency started, they went balls out and almost ran the table... almost.

What I got out of that interview which was very interesting was that BB thought Gronk, Cunningham, Spikes, Hernandez, Larsen and Welch would have been off the boards before he could pick them. This coming from a hardcore 'value' guy. BB really liked this draft I think.
