adam not wanting to be here was obvious. i have no problems with him taking this decision but he didnt exactly conduct business with the pats in FA very openly which is what bothers me. now after a few weeks after the signing , he will appear on espn and talk about his version of the negiotiations and in the end talk about "dis respect" "surprised" etc...when he himself was more than glad to go to the orlando paper and sign off before FA started.

Ted Johnson said on WEEI when he was filling in one Saturday that AV was not happy about being franchised. There is a possibility that he was unhappy/bitter about it and make the decision to move on.

How do you know he did not deal with the "pats in FA very openly? Do you have inside information?

Certainly this is possible...makes much sense..but I think the future will let us know IF it is a physical thing. We knew about hos back problems ..which wasn't his best year..and I remember hearing about them last year...Again, the brain trust in NE keeps these things quiet...I think this may be part of it...NOT all..no way to know.

as i recall the patriots had promised AV that he would not be franchised this offseason. he was not franchised.
had he been franchised, he & patriots would have been tied together for another year (2006-07) at the franchise player average of top 3(?) kickers' salaries. that figure was estimated at $3.25 million, more than the Dolts paid to get AV.

Adam signed for 2.5 million yearly average to kick in a dome and possibly extend his career. Bellichick and Pioli franchised him twice without signing him longterm. It is a great risk on the kicker's career for them to be franchised. One bad turn of a foot, a torn acl or a late hit can doom their career. I think Adam left because he was slighted by the New England franchising. Yes they offered him the highest contract for a kicker but none of it was gauranteed after the signing bonus, that's a slap in the face to the most "clutch" kicker in the NFL with 2 Superbowl winning kicks. He was a great player for the Patriots but they didn't think he deserved it. Considering the Colts were paying Vanderjagt 2.5 million in his last year and had to carry a kickoff specialist because he couldn't handle both jobs, it just made sense to sign Adam and free up an extra roster spot if he can get better distance than Vanderjagt. Even if the Colts decide to carry a KO specialist, it's still an upgrade getting Adam over Vanderjagt. I think it was a good move for the Colts. I also think it's just the Patriots' philosophy to not overpay for a player. I don't believe Adam is overpayed at 2.5 million a year. He's the top kicker in the league. If Vanderjagt had gotten us to the Superbowl and punched it through for a win then I'd be saying the same about him. He's had several chances to prove his worth, and he did not come through.

I understand how some of you say he isn't worth it and that you don't like him anymore because he's a Colt. When a player leaves the Colts to play for the paycheck, he immediatly becomes an enemy. That's part of the game.

Great summary, all around. Really good points regarding the risks Adam was exposed to as a franchised kicker. That had never even occurred to me!
