Unless I'm really missing something, Faulk didn't show any dropoff in effectiveness last year. Not sure why he wouldn't be a lock for this upcoming season.

I saw Kevin knocking people back and hitting people, running hard. He looked great out there.
I think he has lost a step, but he went from incredibly quick guy to semi-quick guy who will put his helmet down and get those extra yards.
So, I just came back from dinner and we had two bottles of the wine for the two of us, so I'm not thinking straight, but I will be very disappointed if Kevin isn't on the team. generally I don't care about a lot of what goes on, and I don't think Belichick is giving Kevin the cold shoulder either, they have to get something done, but if this goes down badly--man, I don't want to think about it.
Put it this way: Kevin Faulk is a New England Patriot!.

You're right, there was no drop off. I had assumed that at least McDaniels and Pioli would throw their hats into the ring, but if not, all the better.
I don't think so and I hope not. I hope he's not getting any offers from them because he and the Pats are hammering out the last details of his new contract. Faulk still has quite a bit left in the tank and needs to be brought back in next season. On top of that, this locker room needs leadership on both sides of ball and if that game against Baltimore should have convinced anyone of anything (aside from the fact that the Pats defense was easily run on last season), it's that Faulk is every bit of that.
Faulk might not be as quick as he used to be but he gets the job done better than any other RB on the team, they better bring him back.

I guess drafting BUMS like "I never play cuz I suck" Wheatley,"see the back of my Jersey as I get burned...AGAIN" Wilhiite, and "maybe my knee will let me play by my 4th year" Tate, wasn't good enough,we've got a guy that is giving Matt Millen a run for his $ by drafting a mediocre special teams player and giving him 1st Rd. cake.
Pass rush? Uneccessary when you have 72 CBS playing.
Lbs? What for, we have no pass rush, they gonna chuck it at our lousy CBS...all 72 of them bums
The Patriots have allowed Kevin Faulk to go out as a Free Agent and see what he is worth on the open market. They are confident that he will come back and say "this is what I was offered". Problem is, nobody believes that Faulk will sign with them, therefore they are not going to help the Patriots by setting the market for them.
Faulk is engrained in this community. He is a valuable 3rd down back. If you look at the numbers of plays he is on the field, its the most of all the RB's. His blocking is vastly underated and his pass catching is superb.
I see Faulk coming back at a reasonable contract (2 years). He is a valuable member of this team.

Some would say that if he were a lock, he'd be signed already.
