Butler has practiced, talked to on many occasions, and has watched tons of film on his mentor and idol Deion Sanders.

If Butler can be 40% of what Sanders brought to the CB position,Butler will be an all-pro

Here was a great little article about Butler coming out of school and his sudden relationship with Sanders....

I saw Butler make outstanding plays on deep pass routes 1v1. Technically he did every thing right. You go deep on Wilhite and its 6 points.

Pass rush? Uneccessary when you have 72 CBS playing.
Lbs? What for, we have no pass rush, they gonna chuck it at our lousy CBS...all 72 of them bums

I don't recall Butler even getting torched, I may have mistaken. The last week of the season when he started for Bodden, Andre Johnson went 6 rec 65 yards 0 TD. I remember a bomb to Johnson where Butler was beat a good 3-5 yards, caught up with him and deflected the pass. I'd consider him close to Bodden right now.

All the peripheral numbers on PFF look pretty bad for Wilhite and respectable for Butler.

Wilhite's struggles remind me of Samuel's early struggles in that he's usually with the receiver but struggles to find the ball in the air. Wilhite could surely make the jump this season but there's no data available to us to make me very confident in that.

I don't get the level of hostility towards Wilhite. I don't think he's shown the ability to be a starter in the league to this point, but it's not as if the guy hasn't demonstrated that he can be a nickel or dime player already. He's clearly talented enough to at least match up against an opponent's #3 and #4 receivers.

Well, I wouldn't really lend a lot of weight to PFF's numbers, either, since their CB rankings are wonky as hell.

That said, the key issue of improving the pass rush remains. If you wonder why a team like the Colts can rely on somebody like Jacob Lacey, it's because they have an elite rush.

Apparently the Patriots are not one of the teams expressing interest in Lito Sheppard (thank god), FWIW.

I wish I had some additional insight into Wheatley. I wonder if the kid, from a confidence standpoint it damaged goods. He looked good vs Indy in 08 and this year was MIA...

You are mistaken. He was targeted pretty often.

If he was anywhere near Bodden, he would have been playing 80+% of the snaps at the end of the season.

He got through the Atlanta game last year, also, without killing us when Wilhite was unexpectedly unavailable. The disappearance of Wheatley is, indeed, weird.
