Say a team places a 1st Round Tender on a restricted free agent (Brandon Marshall for example)

Say New England wants to sign him, but doesnt want to give up their first round pick.

Could New England, theoretically, trade their 1st round pick (#22 overall), to Seattle for their 2nd round pick (#40 overall) and a 3rd or 4th.

Now, we sign Brandon Marshall. We dont have a 1st round pick...

so what now???

Do you mean Denver who has the rights to Marshall??

Teams without a first round pick need to acquire a 1st round better than their original 1st round pick in order to make an offer to a RFA.

i was using Marshall and Denver as an example. so basically, if you dont have a first round pick you cant sign a player with a first round tender...thanks

Correct. You need to use your own draft picks in a round or higher ones. So the Pats could use all three of their seconds to sign RFAs if they want.

The Broncos in this case are permitted to work out any compensation they want with the team making the offer

so let say teh broncos know no one will offer a first round pick..but tehyr eally want to gte rid of Marshall and get something in return

they can agree to take a 2nd round pick from New England...if they want to

If and only if Marshall agrees to sign the tender to allow a trade to happen. Until he does that, the Broncos can't trade him anywhere.

[This was the same scenario with Cassel—if he hadn't signed his tender, the Patriots could not have traded him to the Chiefs.]

To my knowledge, Welker never signed his tender offer and his rights was traded to the Pats for a 2nd & 7th. The Pats then signed him to a long term contract.

I'm fairly sure the CBA specifically prohibits teams from trading negotiating rights, at least for tendered players, if not for everyone.

Miguel, Is that why everybody is saying that if Seattle wants him they have to give their #6 in the first round, instead of the second first round pick or former Seattle pick (ironically from Denver) #14?
