I guess the Kordell Stewart era was before your time.. Maddox was an interim improvement, albeit a fragile one. More of a bridge to their own franchise QB once again, something Cowher realized he needed to compete with BB. And this one was managed conservatively though his early years. Cowher realized to beat Belichick he had to become more like him, more demanding and disciplined as a HC and his teams had to reflect and respect that. He stopped making excuses. I think he left in part after 2006 because he had his qualms about maintaining that given the emerging headstrong nature of his own young QB.

I started watching football in 1995 so no, the Kordell Stewart era was not before my time. Hell, the Neil O'Donnell era wasn't even before my time. As for your "humble pie" argument, I don't suppose it would do me any good to poke holes in it by bringing up Joey Porter's big mouth against the Colts and Seahawks the very year they won the Super Bowl, would it? Cowher didn't change much as a head coach. The little bit that he did sure as hell wasn't because of us. And when you say that Cowher needed a franchise quarterback to compete with BB, it sounds pretty ridiculous to put it lightly. Cowher needed a franchise quarterback to win (because Maddox was not an improvement over anyone except for maybe Rex Grossman) and to ultimately save his job in the long run. Competing with Bill Belichick had absolutely nothing to do with it. I suspect that Steeler fans have just effectively pissed themselves in laughter reading this post.
