Steelers lose assistant Spanos to Redskins

As Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan continues to assemble his staff, he's plucked a longtime defensive assistant from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Steelers defensive assistant Lou Spanos has agreed to become the Redskins' linebackers coach. Spanos will work alongside Jim Haslett, who has been hired as the Redskins' defensive coordinator.

Spanos, who started with the Steelers as a scouting intern, is one of only three assistant coaches to be on the Steelers' Super Bowl XXX, Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII coaching staffs.

The Steelers' coaching staff is undergoing some significant changes: Offensive line coach Larry Zierlein and special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky were fired, quarterbacks coach Ken Anderson retired, and linebackers coach Keith Butler could leave to become defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.
Do the Skins need a Offensive coach?

Haslett and Spanos on the defensive side, huh? Sounds like Shanahan is assembling a pretty good staff in D.C.

Hes got some good talent to work with down there. 'Skins D was not great, but decent. Maybe he learned his lesson in Denver from his last couple of years there.

Tell that to Denver, Notre Dame, Cleveland, New York, Kansas City, and Atlanta (though Dimitroff is not a coach). Am I missing any?

How come were not after any coaches ? We got some serious coaching issues here that need addressing.

I'd hate to see Pepper go, I really like him. I was hoping we'd promote him to DC one of the years, but it hasn't happened.

I'm disappointed that some of our coaches haven't been sent packing yet. If the Skins want O'Brien, I will personally take the time to chauffeur him to DC. I'll even treat Shanny to lunch.
