Default Bills contact Weis about coaching vacancy [merged]

Think again, I think Weis wants to be a HC... And Buffalo is desperate to hire a big name, makes sense to me.

I just don't know. Some guys are meant to be HC's. Others are meant to be great OC's or DC's. I guess Charlie will have to find out for himself whether he can be a success as an NFL HC; things certainly didn't work out too well in South Bend, though he no doubt has his own spin on that.

The details were sparse, but his 10 year ND contract was reported at between $30--40mm. If none of it was up front, then that's $3 or $4 big ones a year. The Bills were paying Jauron $3 million +/- and still owe him for 2010, so Charlie will probably be looking for close to $5. I wonder if Ralph Wilson, Jr., will pay that kind of money for an HC? Maybe he'll finally have to sell those naming rights to his stadium and stop calling it The Ralph.

But, how "big" a "name" is he really? That's not facetious, because I just don't know.

He made a great name for himself as a three ring OC for BB, but not a lot of people have much good to say about his tenure in ND (other than Charlie and his friends, of course).

So, if i'm going for a "big name," I'd go after Cowher or Shanahan or even Gruden (who seems to have taken himself out of the mix), all of whom have rings and a track record. But, my guess is that none of them would play for Ralph Wilson, Jr., whose franchise is on the margin financially and where they'd be concerned that he'd be willing to spend to win.

Ex-Notre Dame Coach a possibility
Updated: Monday, 28 Dec 2009, 1:26 PM EST

John Murphy
Ralph Wilson Stadium - He was just fired at Notre Dame, after five years. Now, sources tell News 4 Sports that Charlie Weis has been contacted by the Buffalo Bills, to see if he's interested in becoming head coach.

Sources tell us the Bills made a back-channel approach to Weis in recent weeks to see if he's interested in the job. And the sources say Weis is interested. So far, it's not believed that the two sides have had a formal discussion about the Bills coaching job.

Weis was fired at Notre Dame after five years and a disappointing 35-27 record. His Fighting Irish finished 6-6 in 2009 , ending a three-year run that saw them win 16-games and lose 21.

Before his tenure at Notre Dame, Weis spent five years as Offensive Coordinator for the New England Patriots. He served on the staffs of Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells in the NFL.

The Bills interviewed Weis for their head coaching vacancy in 2004, before they eventually hired Mike Mularkey. Weis is 53-years old.

Should we fear him going to a divisional rival?

I was thinking he would go and take the Houston Texans job but then remembered Shanahan's son is there as OC and they might go after Mike Zimmer after this season.

If Weis goes to the Bills, the AFC east will have Ryan, Weis, and Sparano. Talk about extending the waist line. I don't see Weis going to the Bills though. He should stay away from HC duties for a while. Only the Redskins job is attractive and Shanahan is most likely going to get that one.

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Attractive? The only owner more meddling than Dan Snyder is Al Davis.

I also agree with what was said earlier - the Bills need a "big name" guy, and right now I don't see Weis as a big name. Not for head coach anyway.

A guy I talk to at work is a Bears fan and he says they are going to send just about everybody packing, so I imagine Charlie's name will come up in that discussion.

Every big name have turned the Bills down. I have read that all Cowher, Shanahan, and Gruden were apporached and all said they weren't interested. Let's face it. No one who can get a job other places want to go to Buffalo. They are a small market team that infrequently spends the money on talent. There is uncertainty with the ownership and where they will be in future. It is frigid. Buffalo itself is a poor city.

Cowher will be able to go anywhere he wants with an opening. It see,s that he will end up in Tampa at this point. Shanahan is destined for DC. Gruden will wait at ESPN for the right job. Weis is the biggest name they are going to get.

The only way I see the Bills getting a bigger name is if they sell the team and move to LA.

The Bills better jump on Weis or they may have Eric Mangini as their next coach. Other than Oakland, I don't think there is a head coaching job less coveted.

There could be several jobs more attractive in my book. Tampa might be available although Cowher is rumored to go there. Dallas may be open, but Jones is going to want someone bigger (in name not waist line) than Weis. Carolina might be available, although the last few weeks could have saved John Fox's job. Tennessee might be available (rumor has it that McNair's meddling with Vince Young triggered an out clause for Jeff Fisher who would bolt to Dallas). Of course there is Cleveland and Oakland.

Maybe its just me but why should a guy that was a failure? as a head coach at one of the most prestige football programs be rewarded with a NFL head coaching job?
