Wes Welker now has 18 more receptions than the guy in second place (R. Wayne), and is averaging 10 more yards per game than the guy second place (A. Johnson.) Projected over a 16 game season, Welker would catch 153 passes. Truly astonishing with just that, but Welker also is fourth in the league in punt return average.

I've heard all the MVP arguments so far, and I'm tired of truly deserving players getting overlooked for this award. The biggest knock on Welker not winning the MVP are these reasons, in order:

1. He's a wide receiver. Not a good reason, but reality of the voting.
2. He doesn't have a lot of touchdowns compared to most MVP-caliber players
3. He missed two games
4. The Patriots' record doesn't warrant an MVP

But the major reasons why he should get HUGE consideration far outweigh these reasons.

1. Welker has been the absolute lead-by-example player in the NFL this year. His blue-collar work ethic, toughness, and perseverance have rallied his own team around him in big situations.

2. There has not been a more reliable, sure-thing receiver in the NFL in my lifetime. Sure, there are amazing deep threats and more athletic players... but Welker is basically re-creating the slot receiver position right now. Defenses simply cannot stop him.

3. As much as Moss and Brady have helped Welker look good in the past, Welker has equally made both of them look good this season. With Brady coming back from major surgery, Wes has been his bread and butter.

4. His numbers/production are mind-boggling, but actually watching the games demonstrate just how dominating he has been. Defenses are completely dumbfounded on how to stop a little 5'9" guy that has great quickness, intelligence, and hands, and then how to tackle him after he accelerates on a dime.

Brees will probably wind up winning the award, and well-deserved, but I've seen a quarterback dominate like that in almost every season. I've yet to see a wide receiver do what Welker is doing this year. It isn't about the touchdowns (Shaun Alexander was a 1-yard TD master) or the glitz; it's about the guy that is the most valuable player in the league. I truly can't think of anyone this season that has been more valuable on either side of the ball.

Also I wanted to add some other players that deserve consideration:

Philip Rivers- what he's done is to me as impressive as Manning or Brees, without the talent

Brees- Does anyone realize that his QB rating is like 17 points higher than Manning's?

Desean Jackson- Another guy who should be put in the conversation before a lot QBs. He has done more to carry his team than Favre.

i do like what Philip Rivers is doing but he dose have more talent then drew brees on he's team

wes welker will not win it cause moss opens up most of the stuff he dose and he only has 4 TD's

Welker is absolutely a legitimate MVP candidate.. but no way he'll get it.

Reasons #110-218: He's a wide receiver.

I agree, he deserves MVP consideration, but he won't get any love. Don't be surprised, though, if he gets votes for offensive player of the year.

Right now Brees is the MVP and deservedly so. Satan manning is a close second. Chris Johnson third.. followed by Favre. Welkers having a great year, but hard to put him ahead of any of those guys.

if we were ripping through this season like the Colts or Saints maybe he would be mentioned more

Because everyone knows he could not line up wide and dominate.

He is a unique tweener type of player that will never get the credit as a stud receiver.

He is more like a running back who motions out into the slot and runs a little sub-5 yard catch and run pattern.

He is a hell of a football player but needs certain things around him to do what he does.
