The point spread is designed to encourage equal numbers of people to place equal amounts of money on both teams.
It's about fans perceptions more than anything else
Set the line too high or too low and too many people flock to one side
The fact that the line hasn't moved in a week suggests that equal numbers of people believe the Pats will win by more than 8 points and that equal numbers think they will win by less than 8 points (or even lose outright)
That's as much as you can say about the line.
